Dennis Quaid suing blood-thinner drug maker

Categories:

Dennis Quaid has filed a lawsuit against Heparin, the blood-thinner that threatened the lives of his twins in 2007, thanks to an accidental overdose. According to Reuters, the suit alleges “the overdose was due to a mix-up over similar labeling in different doses of Heparin.” (The twins were given 10,000 units of the drug rather than 10 of their prescribed Hep-Lock.) Quaid’s twins spent time in intensive care due to the mix-up. Baxter International Inc. did not immediately return EW’s calls for comment.

UPDATE: Baxter has issued the following response to the lawsuit: “While the medication errors that occurred involving the Quaid children are extremely unfortunate, investigations by the hospital and the California Department of Public Health determined that this was a preventable error — as a result of not reading the label. We believe both Baxter and the Quaids have a common interest in reducing medication errors. We feel that working together to address this issue would be more productive than continuing to litigate this matter in the courts.”

Disney will not sell Miramax back to the Weinsteins

According to the Associated Press, the Walt Disney Co. has backed out of a plan to sell its struggling Miramax division to Ron Burkle. Burkle had partnered on the deal with Harvey and Bob Weinstein, the original founders of Miramax, who left in 2005 to start their own independent studio, the Weinstein Company. Apparently, negotiations faltered over various issues pertaining to how the brothers would manage both Miramax and Weinstein Co.

The Miramax division was mostly shuttered earlier this year, but the studio still has a profitable back catalogue of iconic films, including Pulp Fiction, The English Patient, Clerks, The Piano, and The English Patient. Disney is reportedly considering an offer from financier brothers Tom and Alec Gores.

Iran releases filmmaker Jafar Panahi from prison

Categories: Movies, Politics

After two months in custody in his native country, Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, 49, was released today on approximately $200,000 bail, the AP reports. Panahi, who has earned awards at the Chicago, Cannes, and Berlin film festivals, initiated a hunger strike May 16 to protest his imprisonment, and also demanded to see his family as well as a lawyer. Though the exact charges against him are unclear, a state prosecutor stated that Panahi committed unspecified “offenses,” which may be related in part to his involvement in the opposition movement of last summer’s divisive elections in Iran. Most recently, Panahi was expected to serve on the jury for the Cannes film festival, but could not attend due to his detainment.
