American Idol‘s ninth season came to its star-studded conclusion tonight [read our recap, with reviews of every performance, here!] with a live telecast from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles that featured guest performances by Joe Cocker, Christina Aguilera, Alanis Morissette, Chicago, Carrie Underwood, and Bret Michaels, plus several dozen Idol alumni (including seven out of eight former winners) paying tribute to Simon Cowell. In the end, Chicago paint-store sales clerk Lee DeWyze was named the winner over Ohio musician Crystal Bowersox. I truly don’t understand why people would pick Lee over Crystal. I understood Kris over Adam last year, but this? I don’t get it.
i actually prefer Kris’ voice to Adam’s, but I definitely thought Crystal just had a way better voice than Lee’s.

I agree with Will. I acknowledge Adam has a great set of pipes, but I still prefer Kris’ singing.
However, as disengaged as I have been with season 9, I thought Crystal delivered when the pressure was on, while the more Lee sang, the more his vocal limitations were revealed. His voice sounds very harsh and strained when he sings sustained notes.
The only singer worse than Lee tonight was the lead singer of Chicago.
Who came up with that bright idea?

The voting system is broken.. Crystal won last night and she had enough top perfomances in the season to back it.
However except for some tone deaf posters I liked both of them and think Cystal will do just fine. Maybe better not beign chained to the show after the tour
I am writing a SECOND book, but this time about how Chicago and the Chicago MACHINE stole the LEGITIMATE crown from Adam…I mean Crystal. It’s simple- Lee got more votes. Casey fans probably also liked Lee the way Gokey fans would go for Kris. No scam, just their preferences. It’s open to a public vote, you can’t blame a machine when the public willingly chooses someone you don’t want.

It’s not just the fact that most saw and know Crystal is a much better but its also a shame for Lee, he’s now in a spot where he could go down as the worst Idol winner ever. The show created this now have to make this a guy into something. He has no personality but at least his satge presence stinks. They have some work to do with guy. Could be the biggest tank job yet. Yes Simon sees the voting on the wall and why without changes it will crash you can’t have the better people come in second third fourth…. wacthing last night how did Lee get past Shaban, he should have gone after Garcia who should have gone as number 10 Lee should ahve gone as 9 even Aron sounds better and yes even Casey.
The solution is very simple: One person, one vote. If they stop taking multiple votes from the same phone number, the results will be much more fair.
The mediocrity started last year when Kris won and has continued this year. Kris’s performance last night was mediocre at best. His fans had said he got better over the last year. I did not see that.
Though I wanted Adam to win, I wasn’t upset that Kris won. Kris had some very impressive memorable performances, in particular “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Heartless”. Those I enjoyed so much that had to watch multiple times. Although I am very disappointed that Crystal didn’t win, I agree with those that say Lee is much more commercial than Crystal. I will also say that there were several Crystal performances that I had to watch several times because I enjoyed them so much, including some of her original material. I do plan on continuing to vote for Crystal but with my wallet in buying recordings and concert tickets. In fact, I tried a fair amount to buy MP3 downloads of her original material but could not find where I could get them. Although I have liked some of Lee’s performances, there was not one that I enjoyed so much that I wanted to watch it again. I really doubt I will be padding Lee’s wallet, but I do wish Lee the best. He does seem like a good person and he managed to convince the public to give him more votes than Crystal. It is not the first time I am in the minority.
Pitch-deficient Lee DeWorse is arguably the most undeserving winner of American Idol to date. Lee can be described as a singer, yes, but Crystal Bowersox is an artist. She was a rare find; a gem in a season of mediocrity. Visit any site where adults read news and Bowersox support and finale disappointment is rampant. Of the two finalists, Mama Sox proved herself repeatedly throughout the season as the better vocalist, musician, and performer. I wish them both luck (though I suspect only one of them will need it) as I eagerly anticipate news of Crystal’s new album release date. Lee will not pack audiences, is absolutely forgettable, and will be the whats-his-name face of Ford commercials in no time.

I’m with you, I kind of love Kris Allen, and while I think Adam is very unique, and certainly talented, Kris is a better singer and musician. As for Crystal and Lee….. well, I’ll just say I’ve never been more disappointed about the results of American Idol. Wrong. Just wrong.
it’s called the teen texting girls demographic. They’ve become the dominant voting force on this show and this is just the latest result of their handiwork.

The problem is that they encourage you to buy the iTunes and when you do you realize how great someones record will sound. Crystals were boring. Lee’s were the best by far. People voted for him because he sounds better on their iPod than she does
“Front Runners” always suffer from over-exposure. Melinda, Adam and Crystal come out strong and then get so pimped-out that the higher they are, the harder they fall.
I imagine that after this, other voters that are not tweens will bother to vote. Why bother when your vote is cancelled out by some lovesick tween on a mission?
I’m a teacher in the Chicago suburbs (where Mt. Prospect) and one of my teenage students said she text-voted for Lee over 3000 times Tuesday night. Of course, she didn’t do her homework…

I love it when people say “the show is done.” That’s absurd. It’s a reality show that brings in new people every season. It is designed to be a ratings grabber. One bad season of mediocre singers doesn’t mean that the show is over.
They need to END the texting, as a vote method, and limit the # of votes per phone.
I voted for Lee because I love the gruff in his voice. Plus, he sounds awesome on my iPod. Crystal’s just screechy and sounds the same in every song. She also seems old-fashioned.

Truly I don’t believe Cougars or tweens are the reason. I don’t fall into either category. I love Lee’s pre idol music (check out Bridge Burns on Youtube) and his studio recordings. I’m so happy for him!

Although I really couldn’t care who won tonight (1st time I actually liked both of the final contestants), I think it worked out for the best. If Crystal had won, I have a feeling that the title would have been a noose around her neck. She has a much better chance signing a contract where her artistic individuality and songwriting capabilities will be appreciated and not stifled. Lee is a great singer and although I had always imagined him as more of a frontman for a band, he will become much more polished as a commercial artist under the wing of 19 entertainment. Lee is from my area and the outpouring of support for him has been tremendous. Everywhere you go you see people wearing those yellow shirts. We are all so proud of him.

I think crystal was great but to be honest I Was a little bit bored of her and her song choises. Lee is more contemporary, that’s why the teens and everything else. Lee deserved to win. He sang with the most heart and soul this entire season without sounding screechy. And to those of you who don’t think he can sing–what is so great about having another “perfect” singer like Celine Dion? As someone said: if I want to hear flawless singing, I’d go to the opera.
It’s girls going for looks over quality, period. So while the teenie boppers no doubt had the most influence, there are still many others that thought Lee was sooOOOoooOOoo dreamy! Girls are the worst when it comes to hating on other fat girls. So while Crystal certainly isn’t big compared to other American girls, on TV she sure is. Meanwhile we get another Daughtry, Lifehouse, pop-rock clone in Lee.

Lee is more like Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen while Crystal is more like Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge. Who has sold more and won more awards? Crystal was better all season and MUCH better last night and deserved to win, but AI isn’t “the best” it’s “the most popular.” The AI voters are girls and women, and Lee gets their votes and probably picked up many former Casey voters. AI has too many “pop rock” make singer alums already. While Crystal may not have sold as many, at least she’d have been “different.”

Is there anyone who really can say with a straight face that they expect Lee’s album to sell any better than Kris Allen’s dissappointing first album’s numbers? Especially as viewership for Idol continues to drop? Fox needs to decide who they want to please most: AT&T and the power voters, or the larger majority of viewers (most viewers watch the show and don’t bother to vote at all or only vote a few times and then get on with their lives; the ‘tween to cougar set that powertexts and goes to the trouble of using a re-dialer like DialIdol are not the majority of voters and thus their hyperactivity drowns out the normal viewer.) Fox needs to institute limits on voting, unless they want to keep the show top heavy with boring but cute males (look how long Tim Urban lasted this season.) With Simon leaving this would be the perfect time to revamp the show: limited voting, new judges (dump Randy, Kara, and Ellen and find more people that know what they are talking about and who can articulate their knowledge, like Simon), and an emphasis on talent instead of sob stories. If they don’t do something soon Idol is on the fast track to nowhere (just like Lee).
Thanks for raising this point so succinctly. The AT&T, Ford, and Coke sponsorships reportedly brought in 35 million each in 2008, so it’s up to FOX to make that business decision whether the money they make from the sponsorship is more important than potential ratings. I don’t think it was that obvious up until last two or three season that cougars and teens were dominating the voting blocs so they probably thought the unlimited voting properly represented what America wanted and kept viewers tuned in and also supported their partnership with AT&T. I think this season makes it painfully obvious that their voting process is flawed as the vastly superior performer still couldn’t win.

Last year was awkward; this year, a total embarrassment, especially with so many former Idols (winners and exceptional contestants on stage) who sound so much better than Lee. I only watched this year to see Crystal, but I saw this outcome from the beginning, and with the current practices in place, no girl will ever win again. I agree with you two — either regroup completely with a fair voting method, or close this fiasco down. We don’t need Boy Teen Heartthrob Idol. Or maybe that’s exactly what 19 should be doing, and stop pretending it’s anything else.
I think “Idol” needs to implement a voting system similar to “Dancing with the Stars”. The judges should give scores that represent a portion of the total (it doesn’t necessarily have to be half). Then the public gets a limited number of votes per phone, text, or online vote that represents the rest.
Does att want 70-100 million texts from tweens or 15 million texts from everyone else? Considering that every year att gets new contracts during idol and it’s our biggest money maker by far… do you really think we care what you guys think is fair? Idol is a business. Constant harping about Aron not acting young was the dumbest thing thing I ever heard. spotlighted by Sinatra show when they showed how he broke out at 17 as a Crooner (basically acting and singing way beyond his years) is that what they would have told The Chairman dude you sing way too old you’ll never make it.

I do understand, tweens that are more apt to txt frequently voted for the cute one who although couldn’t sing his way out of a paper bag, was more “likable”. As opposed to the one who could actually sing and emote true passion and soul when she sang. I think Crystal still has a promising career ahead of her. Look at Daughtry, even though I’m not a fan, he’s gone on to make a decent career for himself without the winning title.

This is a popularity contest. I think that the majority of voters are “tween-aged” girls who were voting solely on who they liked more as opposed to who was the better singer.
There is a star quality about Lee. The voice is very good and he will improve with age, he’s only 23. I think it was the right choice since Crystal will have a career whether she won or not. Lee improved the most over the course of the competition. I wish them both good luck.

It’s simple: Lee will sell 10-1000 times more records. He’s got a great recroding voice, can write songs, and has a album producing track record. He’s as sure a thing as you get. Crystal is awesome, but it’s very unlikely that you’ll get record buyers to buy her stuff in numbers that are even comparable. As for last year, it’s a mystery to me why anyone would vote for Kris over Adam, and like this year’s vote, the proof is in the record sales (where Adam is making a killing).

While this was a disappointing year…please don’t kill off this show as many seem to want to do – the show needs to regroup for sure – drop Ellen as a permanent guest host – let Simon do his venture & let him experience that the grass isn’t always greener – just because x factor worked in the uk – not so sure it will here – think the america’s got talent suffices our need for that type of show ..Idol literally has 100k new people to choose from every year – they should try the auditioning online & personal videos – besides the onlocation spots, because im sure a lot of talented people don’t want to drive 500 miles and wait all nite to audition – Madonna & Morrissey added as judges with Kara & Randy is interesting to me – with the likelihood Simon will be back in 2012 – then maybe a all-time Idol with all the 1′s & 2′s competing for ultimate Idol
Everybody I know just simply preferred Lee’s singing and style to Crystal’s. Not that Crystal wasn’t a good singer, but a lot of people prefer Lee’s rock voice to the Janis Joplin style folk singing. Can’t wait to buy his album!

Seriously? I’m a woman, I loved both Lee and Crystal, but I preferred Lee’s style. Simple as that. I knew they were both going to be fine no matter what, and I didn’t feel obligated to vote for Crystal because she’s a woman.
I don’t understand either how more people can prefer Lee over Crystal, but apparently they do. I assume that iTunes rankings are according to actual purchases and Lee’s have a higher ranking than Crystal’s. I don’t think people are buying multiple copies of the same song. So I guess I just “don’t get Lee”. For me, Lee is OK but I would not vote for him with my wallet but I have with Crystal. So more power to Lee and his fans. Whom I prefer doesn’t have to be the most popular. I would like to see Idol have a “none of the above” choice that would not crown a winner if even the most popular isn’t up to snuff. Many classical musician competitions do this where they will award 2nd place as highest honor if no competitor seems sufficiently good.

Results ok, I suppose, though I was pulling for Crystal.
Hated almost all of the singing tonight.
Not me! The girls number was great. Standouts were Paige Miles, Siobhan, and Crystal – with big props to Crystal because she didn’t have the rehearsal time the other girls had, yet nailed her part. And to Paige for showing that her past performances were not indicative of what a fine singer she is.
The Casey-Brett Michaels duet was magic. The moment of the night, made more poignant because both guys nearly checked out twice and were saved by modern medicine.
The Siobhan-Aaron number with the BeeGees was excellent and I only wish it was just Siobhan and Aaron doing the whole thing. They had a great duet going. The two strongest voices of the seaon, and they matched up well together.
And – Seeing Lacey Brown, the forgotten teen contestant and Finalist reminded me how much I liked that preachers daughter and the special timber in her voice.
Hope she does well. Another lovely person.

Add to that, Paige Miles’ talk about her throat being under assault all season is starting to seem far more credible. She really knocked her bits outta the park tonight. Anyway, I’m happy for Crystal. A paid summer tour and then hopefully she’s free from the 19 yoke which can suck all the uniqueness out of a young artist’s first release (Allison). I want a purty-durty hippie-chick record on the shelves by spring 2011. Lee, g’luck dude. Your musicianship ain’t my thing but you seem like a nice (albeit jittery) kid.

When has AI ever been not lame? It’s a giant karaoke contest, of course it’s gonna be lame. Fun, maybe, but definitely lame.

That was kind of funny. and i am not a Lee hater. I actually think he can be entertaining. I just don’t think he deserved to win. Not worried though as really 1st and 2nd get an equal a pretty equal chance. And look at Chris Daughtry and Elliott Yamin who have both done better than the winner and runner up of their season. Godd luck to both Crystal and Lee!

what do politics have to do with anything? i wish the 7 dirty words would be expanded to 9 to include liberal and conservative. honestly, you could be debating food recipes and you nutters would find a way to turn it into a partisan debate.
Plenty of African-American’s have noticed the whiteness of the fast few winners. I think Fantasia and Reuben were the only black ones- with Jordan half-representing (doesn’t help blackness was only represented by a guy calling himself “Big Mike”)
JJ, African-Americans are quick to notice the “whiteness” in ANYTHING. I thought Paige was incredible last night, and I really liked her from the beginning. I wish she did better when she hit the top 12. And I love that you judge the “blackness” of Big Mike and Jordan. Looks to me like you’re the one who spends energy on race, not the white people that you blame.
I don’t understand why some people are accusing AI of some sort of bias against African-Americans. Out of 9 seasons, two winners are African-American. That is over 22% which is much higher than the general population. At the end of the 3rd season, the percentage was about 67% African-American. I like Big Mike. He had some excellent performances but I don’t think he deserved to win and he didn’t. Well, I think only Crystal was the only one worthy among this season’s singers and she didn’t win so my opinion obviously doesn’t mean much. ;^)

He did! The last few weeks, Casey’s shown a side of himself we didn’t really see earlier (possibly due to Kara’s lip gloss smeared over camera lens….) He went out a truly class act, and he and Bret were the BEST.
The declaration of Lee didn’t surprise me. Unfortunately, the media and judges jinxed Crystal when they crowned her the front-runner(just like they did to Adam Lambert last year).
Mwahaha.

Crystal is a great singer but sorry she’s not marketable.
Siobhan should have win this if she hadn’t lost her self confidence.

I think Siobhan has an excellent voice. I think her main problem is she isn’t sure what to do with it. One thing I noticed very early in the season is that Crystal was already sure how she should use her instrument, and I think she is the only one in this season that knew what to do with one’s instrument.
That was surprisingly expected.

I’m not a teen/cougar voter yet I agree with Mandy. You guys sound as bad as the homophobics or racists.
It’s a singing competition, however disguised as a popularity contest! You know Crystal should have one, she even shreds a guitar better than Lee. Just shows how sexist this country is, they choose the supposed “cute” one over the one with actual talent. Also, you could tell Lee still doesn’t believe he could be an actual star, his humbleness was and is downright annoying. I see this dude joining a touring broadway show like Taylor Hicks and fading into obscurity.

Crystal has an amazing voice. But I wanted Lee to win, and I’m glad he did. I prefer his style of music and the tone of his voice to her’s. And its not like Crystal needed the win. She is an amazing talent, and will be fine.
I have a real problem with the idea that the winner should be the one who needs it the most, like Kris last year, and Lee this year. I don’t like AI anymore because it’s not about the best singer anymore..Crystal clearly has a better voice, is unique, and has a unique sound. Lee sang off key alot, he’s a nice guy, but his records won’t sell beyond the first one because he really has vocal problems. In the end, your records sell when you can sing!

Oh man, does this mean Vote for the Worst has been right all along? Apparently the rule since Season 8 is to keep voting for the person who needs it most, or wants it most, or is shyest, or cries the most….maybe if we dispensed with the singing altogether, AI could cut down a bunch on air time, and we’d have so much more for Ry-guy, the judges’ flirting, and Ford commercials.
You can get away with being a bad singer if you make dance music and it’s the dancing and the spectacle people pay to see.
@Roxie, Britney Spears sucess, 1 part singing ability, 10 parts sex appeal and socalled dancing ability. AI is a singing competition.
I don’t get why Lee “needed” to win, so what, he sold paint, big deal. Crystal was doing this for her kid and was genuinely a soulful person who had a glimmer of depth.
voting for a lesser singer because “they need it more” is idiotic.
It’s partly Simon’s fault for carrying on about the show being meant for nice guys who need a break…because apparently every other contestant eats with a silver spoon.

i must say, the highlight of the evening was seeing all the idols of seasons past (esp seasons 7&8), but my heart immediately sunk after i realized Cook was still in KC. COOOKIE. COME BACK TO MEEE!!!
I loved seeing all winners but also was wondering why David Cook was missing. I was also trying to see which of the second-placers were there. I can’t recall seeing Clay or Adam. Also, I would have liked to see Daughtry. Some of them I could not tell who they were.
David Cool had already agreed to be at a charity event related to cancer. (Which killed his brother Andrew.)
