The Hangover has picked up the most MTV movie award nominations, according to the network. The film, which collected six nods — including ones for best movie, Ken Jeong (best villain), and Bradley Cooper (best comedic performance for an actor) — leads Avatar in the nomination tally by one — James Cameron’s blockbuster picked up five nominations. New Moon was also nominated five times — and stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner are all up for the new global superstar award — while The Proposal and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince were nominated for four awards.
The show, which will be hosted by Aziz Ansari, will air live from Los Angeles on June 6.

didn’t that movie come out like 3 years ago?
I agree. The MTV awards are always yesterday’s news.
Agreed. But I will give a couple of votes to HBP, Avatar, and the Hangover. All were great 2009 films.
The MTV Awards should be in January, right before the Oscars. By June, people have forgotten last years movies because they’ve already had 6 months of new movies for the current year.
It should be between January’s Golden Globe Awards and March’s Oscars, but they don’t want to put it in that flood of awards shows during that three-month period. Maybe a week after the Grammy Awards would be a good idea. Avatar will most likely win this year because it’s been on everybody’s minds, maybe win more awards than Hangover.
Hangover came out last summer. I think they’re about a year too late sometimes with the movie nominations when they show their awards in June. I think they’re the anti-Oscars, with that show’s high-class, yet conservative stance and overlong 3 1/2 hours awards shows.
Um, Half-Blood Prince is also nominated for five awards: Movie, Actor, Actress, Villain and Global Superstar. Fact-checking is your friend.
While it’s nice to see some actual funny/decent films up this year, the entire exercise is a sham (they come right out and say in the credits that the results are basically gamed). I remember when movies like Pulp Fiction, Se7en, Scream and Lord of the Rings would win Best Movie. Those were the days…
technically daniel radcliffe is nominated for the global superstar award, and not the movie…
He was nominated for best male actor in a film, as was Emma Waston for best actress.
Yeah, I don’t think they included the Global superstar and Bada*s awards in the totals. I think Rupert and Emma should’ve been nominated for the global stuperstar award. All three of them are well known worldwide.
why is zach galafa-i-don’t-know-how-to-spell-his-last-name not nominated instead of bradley cooper?
Zach Galifianakis totally stole the movie. Brad should’ve been up against Taylor Lautner for “Best Abs”.
aren’t they both nominated?
So true. I’m a huge fan of Bradley Cooper, especially in this movie, but ZG was so crazy. Almost every line he has in The Hangover is ridiculous. If you’re giving an award for funny, it should go to him!
I gotta give EW credit for not having a headline like, “New Moon nominated for 5 MTV Movie Awards” and a lede that says, “The Hangover is up for the most MTV Movie Awards this year with six…”
Oh, and Harry Potter has five nominations, not four. You might want to fix that.
And most people will not give them credit for that. All I hear is complaints about how much EW gives Twilight attention. Well, here you go.
I was mostly being sarcastic. That’s just the sort of thing they’d do and have done.
The Global Superstar award appears to be something different than the nominations for the movies themselves. Otherwise, “New Moon” would have 8 nominations.
Might as well give the New Moon people their awards now. It is fan voted awards show and well no more a psychotic bunch then the Twilighters
Not to mention that MTV is affiliated with Summit through Paramount, multiple voting is allowed and encouraged (i.e. ballot-stuffing) and the results are more or less fixed beforehand.
All of which are why these awards are a joke.
Cause all census knows that The Dark Knight was way better than Twilight. But Twilight won Best Movie anyways last year.
They fix the votes depending on which actors will actually show up to that pathetic show. None of the twilight actors have anything better to do, so it will no doubt win everything again.
I just want to say for the record, this coming from a Twilight fan, that I am very disappointed in the nominations. I think NM was a BAD film. I think that Remember Me and The Runaways were by far better and showcased their acting ability better. Kristen should have been nominated for TR instead of NM. The Hurt Locker should be on here too. I truly hope the Sandra Bullock and Betty White win.
I saw that Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens will be presenters. They should have them do a sing-off with Cory Montieth and Lea Michele.
As for Twilight getting more nominations – UGH! Twilight ruined last year’s awards.
No nomination for Jeff Bridges but noms for the wretched actors of Twilight? Give me a break!!
Well, this IS the MTV Movie Awards.
The MTV Movie Awards are an insult to movie fans. Seriously, it’s just an awards show that gives out bs statues to undeserving people and is a showcase for juvenile humor. I remember during the first few MTV Movie Awards when films like JFK, Pulp Fiction, Saving Private Ryan, The Fugitive, Schindler’s List, and Philadelphia were nominated. Those were terrific films. Now, we have the minds of the voters polluted by garbage such as Twilight. New Moon does not deserve those nominations. Being a movie fan, I rented it out of curiosity. It was 2 hrs, and literally nothing happened. All the characters do is complain, sob, and mumble their lines throughout the entire movie. As a love story, it’s awful. As a movie, it’s even worse. In the Best Breakout Performance category, Anna Kendrick is nominated for Up in the Air, and Gaboury Sidibe is nominated for Precious. We all know that none of the voters saw these movies. These two films had substance and redeeming qualities. It’s kind of hard to picture the voters watching these movies when they prefer to watch the Twilight saga with its horrible acting and sparkling vampires. And Robert Pattinson for Best Actor? You’ve got to be kidding me. He’s a horrible actor. All he does is mumble his lines and scowl throughout an entire movie. And Kristen Stewart is no different, except she also seems to have a habit of hyperventilating whenever she says her lines. Even though these awards are a complete joke, it was still such a disgrace last year when Twilight won best movie over The Dark Knight. I guess The Dark Knight was too good of a movie for all the tweeny-bopper voters to handle. I know that the MTV Movie Awards are supposed to honor the popular movies, but why not honor the ones that were both praised by audiences and critics alike? Instead of that garbage New Moon, why not nominate Star Trek? I’m proud to say that I will not be watching this crapload of a show; and that as a serious movie fan, I’m way above this type of thing.
Well said!!
Well said and I agree, except for that Rob and Kristen can’t act, but whatever.
Some of the nominations are well deserved, others not as much. Even if we hope that the best win, it’s not always the case. Last year is a good example of that…
Here, here.
MTV’s been going down the toilet for quite awhile now. They don’t even remember what the M stands for. I remember when they used to nominate movies aimed at adults, not lovesick teenage girls.
*Applause*
If HP got nominated, it would be nice to see them attend the ceremony (maybe for some HP7 promotions).
Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner as “global superstars”? What a joke! If that award was based on actual box office, Sam Worthington or Zoe Saldana would’ve been nominated. I think excessive media coverage has given Twihard Nation the idea that this franchise is bigger than it really is. Avatar made more in the U.S. than New Moon did WORLDWIDE, and Half-Blood Prince, a relatively low-key entry in the HP series, made almost $200 million more worldwide. Global superstars my ass…
And you mention the three of them being up for the award, but not Radcliffe? What’s THAT about?
Radcliffe is the lead in the highest grossing film franchise of all time and the second highest grossing film of 2009. That’s what that’s about.
OK, I have to get this off my chest. I agree that the Twilight movies are ridiculously awful. And the fact that NM is nominated for anything is insane to me due to that fact. They don’t even come close to capturing the essence of the books that initially made all of us fall in love with the story of Edward and Bella and Jacob. But to question why Rob and Kristen and Taylor are Global Superstar nominees is equally ridiculous to me. Because most of you that don’t GET it, it escapes you guys why most of the Twilight fans, the teeny boppers excluded, love this franchise. It all started with the books and then the cast blew it into another stratosphere. The cast MAKE this franchise what it is. They make the movies watchable to us and the way they are outside of the movies is what makes us psycho about all of this stuff. You cannot discount the affect that they have had on women of all ages. I encourage you to watch some of their countless interviews to see just how down to earth and cool and endearing and funny and genuine they are. All of this is the reason why they are getting voted for over and over again. We adore our cast, even if the movies are less than stellar, and that is putting it nicely.
I really hope Summit and/or Little Brown is compensating you for all the incessant cheerleading you do for this crap.
@heather: blah blah blah. let’s be real here, the movies were entertaining yet completely laughable, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th books sucked a big fat one, bella is a heinous pathetic character, edward is a boring character. reneesme is a ridiculous name. in sum, go team jacob!..aka the only person in the twilight universe with an actual (though immature) personality.
Hey Heather, get out much?
let’s just hope that aziz ansari saves the show!
These awards lost ALL credibility they might have had last year when Twilight beat The Dark Knight. GREAT movies used to win Best Movie year in and year out: JFK, Scream, Se7en, There’s Something About Mary, Menace II Society, Terminator 2, A Few Good Men, Pulp Fiction, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Titanic, The Matrix, etc. The late ’90s and early ’00s had some truly GOOD, even GREAT, movies win major awards.
It seems unreal to me that a movie like Pulp Fiction could win the same award as Twilight. It’s like adults with cinematic taste have been replaced by a hoard of screaming teenage girls (and screaming grown women with the mentality of teenage girls).
The nominees/winners are always irrelevant. The MTV Movie Awards is really about advertising and promoting upcoming summer movies. It’s essentially a 3-hour (or however long it is) commercial. Which wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the presenters and their self-promotion, trying desperately to convince us they’re young, heterosexual, and cool so we buy movie tickets.
