CNN and CBS to merge?

Filed under: News and tagged:

The New York Times reports that CNN and CBS are in talks to combine their news resources, allowing for possible cost savings for CBS. The latter network has placed last amongst its evening news competition for the past 12 years, and has been forced to cut staff members in recent years. (CNN, on the other hand, has hired new staffers.) A deal reaching $10.8 billion between CBS Sports and Turner Sports could be reached.

More corporate whoring for the right wing.

CNN is a terrible ‘news’ organization as are most of the cable networks such as FOX, MSNBC. Unfortunately the quality of network news has diminshed as well – too many human interest fluff pieces. Honestly, there is so much news out there, the ONLY network I have seen that truly provides GLOBAL news is BBC news.

hear hear. they ask better questions, they give better opinions, and they dress better on BBC too.

I know what you mean the BBC News broadcast does actual journalism. I remember several months ago CBS evening news – once the home of Cronkite and Dan Rather – did a piece on a dermatologist who had the world’s largest yo-yo collection – I kid you not. I sat there thinking, this is the kind of crap local news is for, is this what American evening news has been reduced to?

I agree completely – BBC World News is a welcome alternative to the over-hyped crap on network & cable news. I am tired of “world” events being characterized as “things that occur within US borders”. Who cares what the best ways to get a tan are, or the top 5 tips for getting a better night’s sleep – give me evidence of an outside world any day! Besides, as Leo says, their wardrobe doesn’t hurt either! :)

maybe this is the first step for Anderson Cooper to take over the CBS evening news from Katie.
