Bret Michaels' doctor: 'Bret's sheer will to live and fully recover is undeniable'

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

In a statement released today by Bret Michaels’ representatives, the neurosurgeon leading the medical team that is treating the 47-year-old Poison singer addressed his recent hospitalization for a brain hemorrhage. “There is no doubt that Mr. Michaels’ condition is serious. We are treating the subarachnoid hemorrhage, which caused his severe cranial pain,” said Dr. Joseph M. Zabramski, who is the Chief of Cerebrovascular Surgery and Director of Clinical Neurosurgical Research at Barrow Neurological Institute (St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center) in Phoenix. “Mr. Michaels will continue to undergo testing considering we have hit a few roadblocks including hyponatremia, severe cranial and back pain suffered from blood drainage, an emergency appendectomy performed a week earlier and a lifelong history of Type 1 Diabetes. However, Bret’s sheer will to live and fully recover is undeniable. He has an unbelievable fight in him and told me what kept him alive at the moment of the hemorrhage was that he ‘did not want his family to wake up and see him lying unconscious in the middle of the floor.’ It was a combination of Bret’s fight to stay conscious during the hemorrhage and get to the emergency room, and the immediate medical attention provided by our staff at Barrow that enabled us to stabilize his condition.” The Barrow medical team will hold a press conference on Tuesday to update his treatment and prognosis. The statement, which confirmed the Arizona location of where Michaels was being treated, comes two days after news that Michaels was responding well to treatment and could resume his tour in late May.

Thank goodness Bret is at Barrow!!! I live near Phoenix and think he has a home in Scottsdale so I was hoping he was there. the BEST Neuro related hospital (St. Joe’s) there is! We checked it out earlier this year when my husband’s lung cancer spread to his brain. Barrow is on the cutting edge of every technology you can imagine having to do with the brain and have the BEST medical professionals on staff. I pray he continues to recover, who knew he was such a TOUGH guy. Go Bret!

I will say a prayer for Bret and your husband.

Awesome. I am so glad he is doing better. He is very courageous to fight to stay concious when it probably would have been much easier to just pass out. I suffer from migraines and believe me a migraine is not just a headache-it would be saying appendicitis is just a stomach ache. I just imagine that the pain Bret experienced would be a many times worse than a migraine. I hope he continues to do well and gives his body some time to heal.

Thank you etm. It has been reinforced to us since my husband’s 4/09 diagnosis that prayer (combined with other things) really works.
