Report links Corey Haim prescription to 'illegal' prescription-drug ring

The death of 38-year-old former teen star Corey Haim may be linked to an illegal prescription drug ring, authorities said on Friday. “We know there was a prescription pad stolen and there was a prescription written for [Haim] using that pad, so it was fraudulent and we know it was filled,” Christine Gasparac, a spokeswoman for California Attorney General Jerry Brown, told People. The L.A. coroner had indicated that four prescription drug bottles were found at Haim’s home; his death Wednesday was described as an apparent overdose.

Brown indicated to the L.A. Times that the prescriptions in Haim’s name turned up in an ongoing investigation by the state of California into fraudulent prescription drug pads. The ring apparently operates by using stolen doctor identities to order prescription pads from authorized vendors, then selling those prescription forms to addicts or dealers. “Corey Haim’s death is yet another tragedy linked to the growing problem of prescription drug abuse,” Brown told the Times.

Ambulance for Tiger Woods cited domestic violence

Tags:

Reuters reports that the Orlando Sentinel got ahold of Florida Highway Patrol records that indicate that domestic violence might have occurred the night of Tiger Woods’ Nov. 27 car crash. According to the records — which were released after a Dec. 16 public records request by the Sentinel — the crew who took the golfer from the scene of his crash did not let Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren, in the car because it was a case of domestic violence.

The records also say Nordegren told officers she used a golf club to break the windows of Woods’ SUV, and pulled him out of the car. One officer noted a cut on the golfer’s lower lip. Woods has repeatedly denied domestic violence claims.

'Two Coreys' producer says Haim's driving desire was a comeback

Why did Corey Haim sign on for A&E’s 2007-08 series The Two Coreys – a reality show — when his greatest desire was to be acknowledged as an actor? Maybe because he felt that before for he could get acting roles, he had to prove that he deserved another chance. “I think that what he probably wanted everyone to see was that he was still capable, that he was still reliable, that he was still talented and had the ability to still perform,” Troy Searer, an executive producer on the second and final season of the show, tells EW. “I think in many ways, he was given a second and third chance. The guy was an immense talent. Could he have become a Robert Downey Jr. or someone of that ilk? Possibly. Possibly. I don’t know. The guy had that talent, he just could not shake his demons.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: During the series, Haim was shown having a meltdown on the Lost Boys 2 set, presumably fueled by prescription drugs. Did the show have the effect he wanted it to? In the end, what kind of effect did the show have on him?
TROY SEARER: I think the show actually had a positive effect on him. I don’t think Corey was willing to go into therapy. I don’t think he was willing to talk to someone in-depth about his problems. We gave him that opportunity with the show. Dr. Nicki Monti is a very accomplished therapist in the world of addiction. I think his time with her was invaluable to him. From speaking to him off-camera, I know it had a profound effect. READ FULL STORY »

Phil Spector appealing murder conviction

Tags:

According to BBC news, the legal team behind Phil Spector is appealing his murder conviction, citing judicial error and prosecutorial misconduct. The 148-page appeal claims Spector — who pleaded not guilty to the murder of actress Lana Clarkson in 2003 — did not receive a fair trial, since prosecutors used testimony from five acquaintances to damage the producer’s image. (The women claimed Spector held them at gunpoint in different incidents dating back to the 1970s.) The brief also claims the trial’s judge allowed lawyers to insist that Spector “had a history and propensity of violence against women and thus should be convicted based on his bad character and evil propensities.”

Spector was sentenced to 15 years to life for second-degree murder in May 2009. He was given four additional years for personal use of a gun.
