Michael Jackson's doctor stopped CPR to hide drugs, witness says
Michael Jackson’s personal doctor, Conrad Murray, allegedly stopped performing CPR on the late singer and delayed calling 911 so he could gather and hide various drugs at the scene, according to documents obtained by the Associated Press.
Alberto Alvarez, Jackson’s logistics director, told investigators last June that Murray grabbed a few drug vials and told Alvarez to store them in a plastic bag. Murray then allegedly told Alvarez to put the plastic bag inside a brown canvas bag, and asked Alvarez to also remove an IV bag containing a milky white substance and store it in another blue canvas bag. Alvarez said that Murray waited until the bags were filled before asking the logistics director to call paramedics. Two days after Jackson’s death, Murray led police to a closet in Jackson’s bedroom, where they found the anesthetic Propofol and other sedatives stored inside a bag.
Jackson’s death on June 25 was ruled a homicide caused by an overdose of Propofol and other sedative medications, according to the Los Angeles coroner. Murray was charged last month with one count of involuntary manslaughter. The doctor pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial. Murray’s lawyer, Ed Chernoff, denied that his client attempted to hide any drugs. Chernoff also told the AP that Alvarez’s first and second statements to investigators have been inconsistent. “He didn’t say any of those things, then two months later, all of a sudden, the doc is throwing bottles into the bag,” Chernoff said.
Chris Evans to suit up as Captain America for Marvel
28-year-old actor Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Sunshine) will step into the red boots of superhero Captain America (and his alter ego Steve Rogers) in Marvel Studios’ upcoming movie, The First Avenger: Captain America, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Evans was offered the highly sought-after role late last week, beating out other prospective candidates such as Ryan Phillippe, Mike Vogel, Channing Tatum, and Sebastian Stan. The deal with Marvel will include options for eight additional movies, including two Captain America sequels, three Avengers movies, and three potential crossover films, according to a source close to the production.
The First Avenger: Captain America is being directed by Joe Johnston (The Wolfman, Jurassic Park III) from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who both co-wrote the first two Chronicles of Narnia films. Also, Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) is close to a deal to play the title character’s nemesis, Red Skull, according to a Marvel source. Paramount Pictures will release Captain America on July 22, 2011. Marvel and CAA, which represents Evans, declined to comment to EW.com regarding the actor’s casting.
'Harry Potter': Fire at Hogwarts, reports exaggerated
A fire broke out on an exterior set of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at Leavesden Studios outside London Friday night, but early reports of the size of the fire and the resulting damage have been exaggerated, according to a source familiar with the incident. During filming for a scene in the final Harry Potter installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a small fire ignited and was quickly extinguished. No actors were present at the time, no one was injured, and no significant damage was caused to the set or to the studio lot in Watford, where all of the Potter movies have been filmed. A fire truck was called to the studio as a precaution, but the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived. The studio, Warner Bros., declined to comment. Hallows, the final book of the Potter series, is being made into two films. The first will be released this fall, on Nov. 19. The second will be released next summer, on July 15, 2011. So far the franchise has grossed more than $5.4 billion worldwide.
