Brad Bird considered for 'Mission: Impossible IV'

A new contender has come forward in the fight to helm Mission: Impossible IV. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Tom Cruise and Paramount has expressed interest in The Incredibles writer-director Brad Bird for the action flick, set for release May 2011. If Bird is chosen for the job, it would be his first foray into live-action directing. Cruise and the studio have also met with Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World‘s Edgar Wright.

CBS to make US version of British show 'Got to Dance'

According to the Hollywood Reporter, CBS is bringing the UK dance series Got to Dance to the States. The network is also apparently interested in recruiting Paul Abdul to be a judge on the all-ages show.

'At the Movies' gets canceled

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the long-running film review show At the Movies has been canceled. The show was famously hosted by Gene Siskel and and Roger Ebert, but currently features A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips. The last episode will air the weekend of August 14.

Michelle Obama to be honored at Kids' Choice Awards

According to the AP, Nickelodeon announced today the network will honor Michelle Obama at the Kids’ Choice Awards with its “Big Help” award. The award is in recognition of the First Lady’s campaign to reduce obesity amongst children. She has taped a message for the show.

Matt Bomer to play Anna Faris' dream guy

White Collar star Matt Bomer is in talks to join Anna Faris in the feature romantic comedy What’s Your Number?. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film, based on Karyn Bosnak’s novel 20 Times a Lady, follows a woman (Faris) who revisits her old sexual conquests to find the Mr. Right among them. Bomer will play her dream man. Ari Graynor (Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist) is also in negotiations, to play Faris’ sister.

Jennifer Love Hewitt makes 'The List'

Angela Bassett cast in 'Green Lantern' as Dr. Amanda Waller

Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got to Do With It, Waiting to Exhale) is joining the cast of Green Lantern as Dr. Amanda Waller, a prominent character in the DC Comics universe, according to Variety. The film, currently filming in New Orleans, stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular superhero, as well as Peter Sarsgaard (An Education), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), and Blake Lively (The CW’s Gossip Girl). Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is directing.

Oscars to continue separate Governors Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that it would continue the tradition established last year of presenting the annual Governors Awards in a separate, un-televised ceremony. This year’s Governors Awards — which could include the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and the Honorary Award — will be held Nov. 13, and produced by former Academy president Sid Ganis. Last year’s awards honored filmmaker Roger Corman, cinematographer Gordon Willis, actress Lauren Bacall, and producer and studio chief John Calley.

Buck Rogers project in development

As Mike Fleming first reported, fighter pilot Buck Rogers is headed for the big screen for a 3-D feature. But don’t look for too many other details — the project, which will be helmed by Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson, is only in development. There’s no script, no budget, and no casting news yet, according to Anderson’s manager, who confirms the director is teaming up with Paradox, the company that controls the rights to Buck Rogers. “This is a development deal,” says Anderson’s manager. “He’s simply joining forces with Paradox to develop a screenplay, and then they’ll figure out what to do with the project.” On board to produce is Anderson’s longtime partner, Jeremy Bolt.

Actor Robert Culp dies

According to the Associated Press, Robert Culp passed away after collapsing outside his home in Hollywood today. The actor was 79 years old. Culp, who starred in the TV series I Spy and also the sex-centric comedy Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, had been writing screenplays, according to his manager. The Emmy-winning actor also starred in films like The Castaway Cowboy and Turk 182!, and boasted a recurring role on Everybody Loves Raymond.
