Paul Greengrass in talks to direct 'Fantastic Voyage' 3-D remake

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Paul Greengrass, director of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, is in negotiations to helm a 3-D remake of the 1966 sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage, according to Variety. James Cameron is producing through his company Lightstorm Entertainment, and the production will use the same 3-D filmmaking technology that Cameron pioneered in his mega-blockbuster Avatar. The storyline will reportedly mirror the original Fantastic Voyage, about a scientist whose dire health can only be treated by five people miniaturized inside a specialized submarine and injected into the man’s body. The original film won an Oscar for its then-cutting-edge visual effects.

That was my first thought, too. I love Greengrass, and have since Bloody Sunday, but I can’t imagine a director whose style (at least so far) is less suited to 3D. I have to think he’s smart enough to realize this, though, and I’m interested in what he might do to make a 3D film that doesn’t require a hose to clean the puke out of the aisles after each showing.

As for doing a remake of FV, I say hell yes, particularly with a good director at the helm. I just hope the villain isn’t as damn obvious as Donald Pleasance was in the original.

    So unnecesary.

I’m getting irritated with people who just kneejerk react to every announcement of a remake as unnecessary. Just because the original “Fantastic Voyage” was made a while ago doesn’t mean it is an untouchable classic. Honestly, I can’t think of a more interesting producer/director team than Cameron and Greengrass to take on a movie like this. I just think of Broadway where you often see revivals and re stagings of plays and musicals. Why can’t movies do the same?

I wish more directors would make movies completely outside of their comfort zone.

I’d love to see Michael Mann do a medieval flick or Tim Burton make a depression-era gangster movie.

Yea! I love the original but it is cheesy enough that it could stand a slick, souped-up remake. [Greengrass haters may want to check out his "Bloody Sunday"]
