NBC's 'Law & Order' may take 21st season to TNT

NBC’s Law & Order could reach a record-breaking 21st season if renewed, but, according to The Hollywood Reporter, TNT, not the Peacock network, may be the one to usher in the 21st installment. (If it reaches 21 seasons, the show would be the longest-running drama series on television, besting a 20-season record held by Gunsmoke.) The crime series has enjoyed heavy syndication on TNT, but the network is reportedly not obligated to continue airing the show past its current season, while NBC is allegedly not allowed to take Law & Order to another network. The possible renewal comes on the heels of low ratings and cost issues that have posed a difficult situation for NBC. If the series heads to TNT, the network’s license fee could reportedly offset some of the costs.

I think this season of L&O is great, I record it every week. I really hope they don’t do what they did to Criminal Intent and ruin it by shluffing it off to USA and then replace all of the characters like they are doing this year. Leave Law and Order Original Recipe alone!! Ten o’clock on Mondays is perfect for it, darn it all!!!

You need to reread that Hollywood Reporter story. It doesn’t say the show could move to TNT, it says that NBC needs TNT to agree to air reruns of the new season in order to justify a new season airing…ON NBC.

Thank you Rob. Archana def needs to re-read that story. She got it all wrong.

Man, EW is going to h*ll in a handbasket. Is there any quality control at this site?!?

Wow I guess I should start following all of the links EW includes in its stories to make sure I react to the right news! Thank you Rob for checking out the whole story and clearing this up!! :)

it’s time to say goodbye to L&O,L&O CI! Keep SVU.

@Rob – Thanks for clearing that up. That is a different story entirely. I couldn’t imagine why NBC would be dumping a semi-successful show when it is hurting for things to fill its schedule.

I don’t care where it airs, I just hope they get one more season. I want them to break the record. I think they deserve it.

It would probably do better on TNT than NBC. TNT knows how to promote shows. “The Closer” is the biggest series on cable. Thank TNT and Kyra. On the other hand, NBC only knows how to promote Leno.

I think it has been better now than it’s been in a long time. They still have a good year or two left in it.

L&O is better than ever. SVU and CI are tired, but I still find myself riveted to the original, thanks to some excellent casting. Is it a vehicle for the long term? No, but NBC cannot afford to lose one of the very few familiars on its schedule, that if the web genuinely wants to regain its mantle of quality and ratings after its Leno/reality show debacles.

  • Yes

It has such a great cast, I don’t see another show doing any better frankly. NBC needs established shows right now since most of their stuff is horrible right now.

I want to see the 21 season record posted in the TV history books. Give it one more run NBC!

As a long-time fan, I hope NBC will renew the show for a 21st season. With all of the dumb decisions NBC has made of late (Leno at 10?), do they really need another one? Dropping L&O would be right up there, though. Leave L&O right where it is!

I don’t want it gone, I want all 3 L and O to last forever. The whole family watches, including reruns. You are throwing under the bus, for a very few who don’t know how awsome these are. How do we protest?
