Conan O'Brien passes on hosting The Tony Awards

Conan O’Brien has passed on the opportunity to host this year’s Tony Awards airing June 13 on CBS, according to his reps. Internet reports today alleged that O’Brien’s decision was due to his agreement with NBC after he left The Tonight Show. But neither NBC, CBS, or O’Brien’s reps would confirm or comment in regards to that.

He’s not right for the Tony Awards anyway. No connection.

He’s not right for anything! Well, maybe a rodeo clown.

      • LOL

I normally don’t like pedestrian vulgarities, but I do agree with you LOL that Conan is a tool.

      • bringbackrocky

Hey, change your name to Lame Jeno and then you’ll have it right.

Does NBC realize that he wasn’t asked to do “The Tony Awards Show with Conan O’Brien”? Wasn’t his agreement not to so another talk show?

    • WhitneyD

Actually his agreement was to not appear on television period. That’s why he couldn’t appear on Oprah, even as a guest.

    • WhitneyD

Er, not to appear on television at all for the specified period of time.

(I need to learn to proofread before I hit post)

  • Rob

They should have Hugh Jackman or Neil Patrick Harris host again.

    • Anya

      I love NPH!

    • Abbie

      Or both Hugh and NPH!!!

      • Shamus N.

Or Hugh, NPH, and Betty White!

But I thought though that Conan was only barred from TV until May 1?

  • Michael

It was a ridiculous proposition to begin with. The attempt to get ratings would have sullied this show. I love Conan but there’s no reason whatsoever to have him host the Tonys.

  • Jackie

I agree. As much as I love Conan, I don’t think he’d be right to host the Tony’s. How about NPH and Kristin Chenoweth as co-hosts?

    • Elizabeth

      I love that idea!

    • vicki

      I’m down with that!

    • Jesse

Kristin Chenowith couldn’t possibly be more annoying.

      • James

GASP! Bite your tongue! She’s divine! And yes, I know how gay that sounds!!

    • Oma

I agree! NPH and Kristin Chenoweth. The would be the perfect cohosts.

  • Le

As an avid fan of theater, this would be a complete mistake. I’ve watched the show every year since I was young (now in my late 20s). I would have to admit that this decision would have made me seriously contemplate not watching. Harris or Chenoweth would be a smart decision!

  • Jennifer

This doesn’t make sense. Why would CBS want to promote Conan? He’s not one of their own. I think his handlers are blowing smoke.

  • cameobrooch

Grrr…I bet Jay Leno is behind this!

  • shelsby

Conan hosting the Tony’s doesn’t make any sense…unless CBS wants to cash in on those who might tune in to see Conan’s first TV gig. Needless to say, it’s not a good match–Conan did a wonderful job hosting the Emmys-Twice!

If CBS wants to look at their own talent within the confines of their network and cable holdings may I suggest…Stephen Colbert?! The man can sing and dance…and is funny!

  • Mike J

The Kristen Chenoweth and NPH cohosting would be great. I know NPH is suffering awards show overexposure, but he has the right amount of reverence and irreverence that you don’t see in hosts. How about Betty White and NPH? That would be a gas.

  • Kayla

CBS has the gem that is Craig Ferguson, why not use him? I’d love to see him let loose at the Tony’s, he has no problem going a bit over the top. It seems like a great platform for him.

    • mtraptor

Seconded, I’d definitely tune in and I don’t watch the Tonys every year by any means.

  • dallasJack

The reason he isn’t doing it, is because Jay Leno is doing a “Anthony Awards” 2 hours before the Tonys….

  • jake

This was just done by CBS to get more press about conan to remind viewers that they should be watching letterman instead. CBS knows full well about NBC’s agreement.

  • Alex

I doubt NPH is available this year because of the production of RENT he is working on at the Hollywood Bowl this August. I would love to have him back as a host though. Maybe Sean Hayes can host this year.

  • Secondrink

I doubt Conan thinks this would be good choice anyway. He’s said that he’d be wary of hosting the Oscars because he’s a TV guy and doesn’t belong there, which I kind of agree with, so the Tonys would be completely foreign to him. Besides the fact that I don’t see how he could have fit hosting into his schedule as his tour runs well into June.
