Chloe Sevigny says last season of 'Big Love' was 'awful'

In a rather long, wide-ranging interview with the A.V. Club, actress Chloë Sevigny called the latest season of HBO’s polygamist drama Big Love, which had its season finale on March 7, “awful” and referred to as a “telenovela.” “It was awful this season, as far as I’m concerned,” Sevigny said. “I’m not allowed to say that! It was very telenovela. I feel like it kind of got away from itself. The whole political campaign seemed to me very farfetched.”

After those statements, Sevigny backtracked a bit, saying, “I mean, I love the show, I love my character, I love the writing,” and blamed the messy season on the fact that there were only nine episodes, saying that the producers “had more story than episodes.” She added: “I think next season, they’re going to go back to more just the family.”

UPDATE: HBO has issued a response to EW: “We were surprised to read the comments and knowing Chloe we trust these were taken out of context. The fans thoroughly enjoyed this past season and, like them, we look forward to another exciting year from [co-creators] Will [V. Olsen], and Mark [Scheffer].”

UPDATE 2: Chloe Sevigny talks with Michael Ausiello to clarify her controversial remarks

I hate to say it, but I agree with her. I love the show, but they tried to cram in waaaayyy too much this season. While it had some really high notes, the season ended with too many loose ends that were never tied up and it felt too rushed. I’m still looking forward to next season in hopes that it will be better!

    • Maserda

But why only a 9 episode season? Geez, that is short!

      • Danno

I agree with tianshi. Wait what were we talking about?

    • dave g

i agree with you Laci… plus the season was way too far fetched… i hoping that last seen will just be Barb daydreaming

      • DS9Sisko

What the the last SCENE though?

    • laylagalise

I agree with her and with you. The political campaign was unbelievable and that last scene was ridiculous. I hope “Big Love” returns to its roots next year with a focus on realistic family drama.

      • Shel

I’m not quite sure how they get past that last scene though. As for those who haven’t watched it yet, I would definitely recommend it, but it did feel altogether too rushed. I hope they take some time to go back for a few of those loose ends.

      • Shel

Are we sure it is definitely coming back? I was thinking I heard it might not, which might explain the rushed-packed nature of this season. The creators may have wanted a feasible end-point just in case?

I have to agree with Chloe too. I love the show, but I hated the political aspect of it. Who would want to vote for Bill. He plays his character so well that all you could think of is “hypocrite” and wonder why anyone would want to vote for him. hahaha. So I agree with her. I loved the other stuff, but I could do without Bill running for any political office.

  • SMS

I respect her honesty. I think it is a great show, but this season had way too many crazy plot lines, and got away from the character development. Hope the writers are able to listen to the criticism to make the show better.

  • Juan Art Herrera

well who knows, maybe the telenovela will find love in Emmy voters this year? And funny she calls it a telenovela, no wonder why me and all my fellow Latin American friends LOVED the season :)

  • Myndi

So, question for those who watched…I am a huge fan but we cancelled HBO this year and I was going to get it on DVD. Should I just skip this season, or watch it for continuity reasons?

    • Vikki Sixx

Definitely watch it. A lot did happen…it just seemed too cramped.

    • Ed

I say still rent it, but don’t expect too much. While I thought some episodes were too over-the-top for Big Love, some episodes and storylines were good. Really good. One story I really loved was Alby’s. And while I do think they pushed too many stories into too few episodes, as a whole, I do think there was a singular theme they were working toward and they got there in the end (and I think that the theme was clearly set up in the new opening to the show…no more skating on ice and “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys). Bottom line, though: regardless of how much you like/dislike this season, I do think you will need to see it if you want to see season five. There are too many storylines that will carry themselves into the next season, and you’ll be a bit lost if you skip season four.

A bad season of Big Love is better than 90% of whatever else is on television.

  • Jay

I hate to say it, but i agree with her. I found myself watching out of obligation, and definitely towards the end, i’d felt like my time was wasted. Bill became unlikeable (throwing his long time business partner under the bus was so out of character), and the whole political thing just didn’t make sense. I hope it gets back on track next season, or i’m done.

    • Sally in Chicago

I hate it when actors are perceptive and honest about a show and then for “political” correctness have to backtrack on their statement.

      • Q

I agree – I think her comments were honest and constructive. Not only that, it’s clearly meaningful to the fans of the show (on EW.com at least) that she said this – makes her statement that next season will be better that much more credible. I don’t see the comparison to Heigl’s “I don’t deserve an emmy this year” at all.

      • Mr. Cairo

It’s not a question of political correctness. She probably just doesn’t want to be seen as biting the hand that feeds, or face a backlash for seeming ungrateful, as Katherine Heigl encountered. She relies on the writers for her role and wouldn’t want to tick them off.

    • Ambient Lite

Jay, totally with you about Bill becoming unlikeable, that was the nail in the coffin this season.

  • Laura

I don’t think Bill throwing Don under the bus was out of character at all. Bill is a dick, always has been. This show has never been about him anyway. All about the 3.

    • laylagalise

Not our of character, but unforgivable. Then to completely ignore what has happened to Don’s family as a result of being outed and still deciding to out his own family… completely selfish. I love the show, but I despise Bill.

      • laylagalise

        *out

      • Snsetblaze

He has thrown all of his business partners under the bus (Tommy and Jerry) as well as Don.

The bright spot was that Sissy Spacek was great!

  • Michael

This season was easily terrible. It had some really good moments(most of which involved Alby, Barb(JT better be nominated this year) and/or Nicky), but the senate race, the showdown in Mexico and almost everything involving JJ were ridiculously over the top.

  • dmac2498

It wasn’t a great season, but I wouldn’t got to the extreme of saying that it was awful. I do agree that there was too much story to cram into just 9 episodes, and if they had had the additional 4 episodes, I think it would have ended better. I disagree with the comments that Bill acted totally out of character too. I think that Bill acted every bit like the A-hole he has always been. Bill has always been a rather unlikable character at times, I totally believed him throwing Don under the bus, because he’s done it to others in the past, the only reason is that from a story standpoint everyone else has been dirtier than him. That being said I do like the show and look forward to next season and seeing what they could do with a complete 13 episode pickup.

  • stacy

I agree with her! It was completely awful there were a few good moments but for the most part I ended the season hating Bill and Margene. I felt Barb was just plain weak for telling Bill she didn’t need him anymore and then still going up on the stage with him. Very disappointing season. And when Lois cut of that guys arm it was just plain dumb!

  • Ambient Lite

Though I think saying that was a very Nicki-like thing for Chloe to do, I also agree with her.
    Season 3 was the best.

  • Martillo

She is just mad because there were no scenes where she’s giving someone a hummer. The producers pull her out of the porn world, and this is the thanks they get?

    • anna

she was never in the porn world?

      • Dave

Martillo’s talking about “The Brown Bunny”, which was an attempt at an art film, rather than porn; it did, however, feature her actually performing the act on Vincent Gallo.

  • liz

I just cant get behind this show, the polygamy just offends me, in general. but this girl must not value her job to make comments like that! bad job move!

  • Kevin

i LOVED this season…It was face-paced, exciting, original, thought-provoking… yes the writers and producers included A LOT of stories into these nine episodes, but everyone would be complaining and saying it was boring if they only focused on one storyline.

  • Hannah

Man! I just finished season 3 on DVD, and was looking super forward to this one. Shoot!

  • Angie

If Katherine Heigl would of made those statements everyone would be bashing her right now!!

    • LM

Of course everyone would be bashing Katherine Heigl if she made these statements. Talking badly about a show she’s not on and has no connection to would be really poor form for an actor.

    • whatevs

I agree, Angie. Although it doesn’t bother me when an actor badmouths a project they’ve participated in, I know it does for most people. I’m surprised no one here has called Chloe Sevigny all kinds of names by now.

    • harry

Totally! wait a minute… I think she did.

    • Diggity

I didn’t feel like Chloe was bashing anyone. Her comments were critical but constructive. Heigl’s comments were nasty and self serving.
