Classic cartoon series Popeye will get the 3-D CGI treatment from Sony, Variety reports. This will be the sailor character’s first foray into film since 1980′s live-action movie starring Robin Williams and directed by Robert Altman. Though the storyline is being kept secret, it will involve villain Bluto, love interest Olive Oyl, and adopted child Swee’Pea.

A cgi Popeye in 3D? Really? Is there anyone out there under the age of 40 who even remembers this character from their childhood? Sort of doubt it…
I am 32 and I know who Popeye is.
I’m 25 and I remember Popeye…
I’m 24 and I remember Popeye.
I’m one and I know who Popeye is.
Brian P comment fail
I’m still in my mother’s womb and I know who popeye is!
I am 23 and I remember Popey. I am curious as to how this new one plays out.
I haven’t even been conceived yet and I know who Popeye is.
I’m 21, and I know Popeye
I’m 24 and I remember Popeye. It made my younger cousins eat spinach.
I’m from Ork and I know who Popeye is. But I still have to say “Why?”
I’m 19 and I know who Popeye is.
My 10 year old cousins know who popeye is.
in fact one of them does a rather adorable impression.
I’m a sperm and I know who Popeye is.
18 and I know what Popeye is.
I am 25 and I remember Popeye too. I even remember watching the Robin Williams movie when I was 6 or 7 and thinking it sucked. Hopefully the new one is better.
I’m 35 and I loved Popeye whan I was little. I made my Parents Buy Me Spinach. I thought it was gross and didn’t like popeye as much after that.
lol!
your comment made me laugh out loud, which in turn, made my co-workers wonder what it is I was laughing at… damn you! (thanks for that though!)
I used to watch Popeye toons after school. I’m actually looking forward to this project.
I just hope they make Olive Oyl a little chunky. I always found it disturbing that the hulking Bluto wanted to get with that stick. He’d break her in four!
Ugh, worst cartoon from my childhood….
Agreed. I hated when it would come on. I also really hated Peanuts. I’m sorry, but why do people make boring cartoons? And then why do they revive them and think that CGI and 3D will polish the t**d?
Fail.
damn- i loved that cartoon as a kid but we should expect this one to get the Chipmunks treatment. Hopefully, within the decade they’ll still be at least a few children’s classics that the studios leave alone… unlikely however
I hope this movie brings about an update to the classic Popeye video game!
It will be interesting to see how they update this. Maybe instead of eating spinach, they’ll make Popeye drink a protein shake to get strong and not make Olive a stick figure with hair.
Jay: That game was awesome!
I remember the movie and the cartoons. They used to play them on Cartoon Network when they were first starting out.
JUST AS LONG AS THEY DON’T TRY TO REMIX THE SONG INTO SOME HIP-HOP BS.
I’m 34 and I’ve heard of Popeye. I’ve seen the cartoon as a child.
popeye in 3d? ehhh i dont like that……he’d look a little….more grotesque then usual i think haha i dont think they should mess with 2d popeye and friends (btw 19 and watched popeye….wimpy was my favorite character though
)
I know who Popeye is and he sucks. Stupid sailor that has the hots for some ugly chick that for some reason has two dipsh*ts fighting over her. It’s a cartoon version of the Jerry Springer Show.
I’m 28 and I remember popeye.
3D and CGI? Thanks, but no thanks. I knew this 3D thing would become a trend that Hollywood would hop on, thanks to Avatar. Newsflash studio execs: NOT EVERYTHING IN 3D WILL MAKE MONEY. But I’m sure they will only learn the hard way.
What you think Avatar inspired the 3D thing…? 3D and CGI have been the tread for years now. The only problem had always been the number of theaters that had 3D projectors, which is growing. Having 3D at home is the next tread that they are trying to launch for the next 10 years.
CGI is more expensive, but 3D is just a special camera… now after Avatar, they have a much, much, cooler way to do live animation. It’s even a step ahead of the Jim Henson Studios way of doing puppeteering…
