Today, HBO announced their cast for the network’s five-hour miniseries, Mildred Pierce, which will begin filming in April. Kate Winslet will play the title character, Guy Pearce will star as Monty Beragon, and Evan Rachel Wood will play Veda Pierce. Melissa Leo, James Le Gros, Brian F. O’Byrne, and Morgan Turner round out the cast.
The miniseries, which follows a single mother and her daughter during the Great Depression, is based on the novel by the same name by James M. Cain.

Nice cast! Winslet is obviously fantastic, but I also have much love for Pearce.
This doesn’t start shooting till April, but Winslet should start preparing her Emmy speech right now.
Kate Winslet!!! I hope she wins an emmy for this, she is long overdue.
Then She’ll have EGO out of EGOT. Next, TONY!
Kate Winslet has a Grammy?
Yup – Best Spoken Word Album for Children in 2000.
She won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children in 2000 for “Listen to the Storyteller”.
Um, why? With all the contemporary stories just dying to be told, why are we revisiting the Great Depression and why on earth would Winslet want to draw comparisons to Joan Crawford? Even if she does a better job, she’ll never match the glamour of Crawford.
I know of Joan Crawford (b/c of Mommie Dearest so not entirely favorably), but don’t really know her work at all. I’m in my 20s. Unless you’re a film major, I’m pretty sure ol’Kate will be safe from the comparisons.
Mildred Pierce was and is a huge film winning the academy award. Movie buffs of every age will want to compare the two. I just heard of someone who is cast to play Ida Corwin’s husband (Mildred’s business partner) and in the film, Ida had no husband which was a big part of her personality. By the way, Mildred Pierce, the novel is also in print, great book from many many decades ago! Worth reading!
This miniseries is NOT remake of the film classic with Joan Crawford. It is inspired by the novel from which the original film was inspired from, but the take and interpretation will be markedly different from the film. Additionally, the director Oscar nominated Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, Safe) is noted industry wide for turning expectations entirely upside down.
Kate Winslet (age 34) is playing the mother of Evan Rachel Wood (age 22). Lame. Seriously, why can’t they for once cast women in semi-age-appropriate comparative roles.
When The Graduate was made, Anne Bancroft was 36 and Katharine Ross, who played her daughter, was 27. Not saying I necessarily disagree, but sometimes age doesn’t matter.
Angela Lansbury played the classic mother from hell in the original “Machurian Candidate” in 1962. She was only 3 years older than Laurence Harvey, the actor who played her son. Somehow it worked — the movie, and especially Ms. Lansbury, are great. Sometimes the age differences between the actors doesn’t matter.
If you know the story, both mildred and veda age throughout the movie so by the end veda is early twenties and mildred is well into her forties.
I do know the story, have seen the original a few times and don’t quite understand your point. They both age, therefore, the difference in their ages (12 years) stays the same.
I’m not sure I like Evan Rachel Wood as Veda. I was pulling for Emma Watson (she has an uncanny resemblance to Kate), but I guess she’s busy with school and Potter.
I’m excited to see this miniseries! Kate Winslet is BRILLIANT!!
The original was amazing, so I hope this re-make does it justice.
I will see anything that Kate Winslet does.
DITTO
I remember a little brouhaha delivered by Brits about an American playing a Brit. I hope they shut up.
um, this is old news. variety announced winslet playing the lead back in august ’09.
This explains why Evan Rachel Wood quit the Spiderman musical. There was a blind item on CDAN, that Entertainment Lawyer site speculating that she quit the musical for other reasons. She’s not mentioned by name but she is one of the top guesses in the blind.
Gosh this is such old news.
I would like to know what the name of the car is the Monty Beragon is driving in this movie??
So would I.Been racking my brain.Possibly a Chrysler or Packard.Let me know if you find out .
After freeze framing the car scene,it is a Cord L29 Cabriolet.Use search engine to get some great photos. It was a front wheel drive design
