Legendary rock band Pink Floyd filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the record label EMI over online royalties, according to Reuters. The group behind such hit albums as Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall signed with EMI more than 40 years ago and is now disputing how online royalty payments and the marketing of their music is determined. The band is also challenging EMI’s ability to “unbundle” their albums and sell individual songs online. Robert Howe, the band’s lawyer, told the High Court in London that a contractual clause “expressly prohibited” the practice. While the suit only seems to directly involve Pink Floyd, the end result of the suit would obviously have a huge impact for other bands going forward.

For many bands, unbundling their albums to sell individual songs is a good thing as I believe that’s the direction the music industry is heading. The hit single will be more important than an album. However, many of Pink Floyd’s albums are designed to listen to as a whole project, rather than individual songs. I hope they win that part of the lawsuit.
Money, it’s a crime

But don’t take a slice of my pie
So does this mean Roger and David actually agree on something? Maybe they can get together for pints to talk crap about EMI and decide to go on tour together.
