The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Animal Planet has greenlit a new series based on Oscar-winning documentary The Cove. Like the film, the series will star animal activist Ric O’Barry — seen on last night’s Oscar telecast holding up a sign asking viewers to text a number for more info during the filmmaking team’s acceptance speech — and continue the exploration of the dolphin fishing trade in Japan. Animal Planet hopes to debut the series in the fall, after premiering the documentary this summer.

I feel for these fishermen. This is a relatively small hunt compared to the scale of the meat industry in America. I suppose its easier for activists to target a single community on the other side of the world than the enormously destructive and inhumane meat industry in their own backyard. How about working where it can really make a difference? It’s called priorities?
Have you even seen the movie? Doesn’t seem like it…
You would not feel for these fisherman if you saw the film. While the American meat industry IS destructive and inhuman, the reason this man is focused on the dolphins and this community is because he feels responsible in a way. Just watch the movie…
The fishermen in the Cove go after Dolphins that are sold to shows like Seaworld and to trainers. Where they differ from the American meat industry is that Americans eat what is killed by the meat industry. The dolphin meat, as explained in the documentary, is not readily eaten nor is it good for the human body. Watch the doc before making generalized and vapid comments.
Green Sleeves, One has to choose his battles, Ric O’Berry can’t fight them all. He’s the specialist in dolphins so that’s where he dedicates his time. If you’re an expert in cattle, chicken, etc., dedicate your time to that!
Besides, I’m sure Ric and the gang would certainly agree with your premise, that we’ve got a massive problem at home. All these battles must be fought, including the one in Taiji.
THE COVE makes a terrific film. Do you like eat Dolphin meat? The Japanese people clearly don’t. It’s being sold illegally as ‘whale meat’ and with threatening mercury levels poisoning the Japanese people. The film makes a compelling case for anyone with a soul to take action – just look at these magnificent creatures.
