Cannot believe Sandra Bollocks has an Oscar, especially for that pathetic After School Special. Love her, but she doen not deserve to have an Oscar.
Sandra deserved it. The best actress won. Nuff said.
No. Gabourey Sidibe was best. Then Streep. Then Mulligan. Then Mirren…and THEN Bullock, the least deserving (though still good) of the five.
No, not “nuff said”. She was competent, but not Oscar-level. The role did not require that much range and a lot of actresses could have done it just as well or better.
Obviously the Academy doesn’t agree with you.
Actually, out of most of the major awards, Bullocks was the only just win. The Hurt Locker? Seriously? Let’s take the most cliched, emotionally manipulative bit of generic action films and string a bunch of them together, dip it in the military, and half-drape it in a flag. *gags* Sorry, I wouldn’t give that movie the time of day, let alone an award. (And the amaeturish Precious, as well – ugh). Mirren and Streep already have Oscars, Mulligan and Sidibe are first timers (and thus almost never win actress), so it was Bullock’s time. And it’s not like she doesn’t deserve it for her body of work. (And you also must not forget that the Oscars are a political award above all.)
Excellent. A good spread of wealth, and the right stuff won. The Hurt Locker got the praise it richly deserved, and Avatar has its box office and its deserved tech awards. Combine that with Mo’Nique, Bullock, Bridges and Waltz, and I’m happy.
Overall a good show. The only major “WTF?” moment was them having the gall to have TWILIGHT actors present a horror-film montage that contained a TWILIGHT clip and was in an of itself completely unnecessary. It screamed of audience-baiting and was a turnoff. If the montage had been bad teen romance movies OR a horror film had been nominated this year, it’d be a little different. The whole exercise just seemed forced and stupid.
But that was a minor blip in an overall good show.
The HL owes its success to the critics. It was the critics that discovered it and promoted it, and kept in the public’s eye.
Kristen Stewart looked scared and uncomfortable on the stage….like she didn’t belong.
…Probably because she doesn’t.
She didn’t. She is a sulky, wooden, one-note pseudo-actress and is completely classless.
Totally agree with Kendra. I HATE Kristen Stewart – so fugly and plain.
Wow, etm…Kendra’s comments have NOTHING to do w/Kristen Stewart’s appearance, but rather her acting, personality, and carriage in public. Glad to see your priorities are in the right place. Women everywhere thank you.
Jen, I agreed with Kendra, and am adding other things that are wrong with Kristen Stewart. If she wasn’t sulky and classless, then it wouldn’t matter if she was so plain – her personality would make up for it!
Persoanlly, I though The Hurt locker was total manipulative crap. It’s this year’s Crash.
Finally my favorite movie wins!
One big surprise of the evening was “Precious” winning Adapted Screenplay.
A worthy group of winners, for the most part.
I’d have preferred IB or Up over THL, but it’s a nice salute to art over commerce.
I think Harve Weinstein learned that he isn’t as powerful as, say, Oprah. I would have thought all the campaigning Harve did would have gotten Tarantino Original Screenplay at the very least but still IB only ended up with its one sure award. On the other hand, Oprah only had to mention Precious a few times and, BAM!, the film surprisingly steals Adapted Screenplay from Up in the Air. Sorry, Harve, you don’t rule Hollywood.
Weinstein was never powerful in the first place. Case in point Pulp Fiction
The Weinsteins, and Quentin Tarantino got Gumped by Robert Zemeckis.
Charlize Theron made a mistake when she said Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire got 4 nominations when it really got 6.
Blame the script, not Charlize.
Yep. Another boring, predictable Oscar telecast finally comes to a bloated, overlong conclusion.
BRING ON CLASH OF THE TITANS!!!!
Don’t watch then. Nobody is making you.
LOL Took all but a second to get a defensive reply from that one.
What I meant is that we all knew what was going to happen. All the predicted favorites got the picked awards save for a few back and forths between Avatar and Hurt Locker. The telecast itself was a little better than last year, I’ll admit, but my biggest problem with the Oscars is that there’s no spontaneity. Regardless of whether you liked the show or not, you can’t deny that.
This show was not boring! It was the best telecast as a whole in years!
The show had too much filler and the concept of two hosts cut the amusement quotient in half rather than doubling it. Definitely one of the worst telecasts in recent years. But I keep watching every year hoping that it will get better. And even in a bad year (like this one) there are moments (Tina Fey & RDJr, Katherine Bigelow winning Best Director, for example) that make it all worth it.
Buy a DVR or don’t watch it.
yay sandra!! im so happy she won, she deserved it!! the blind side was amazing!!
Sandra showed a great deal of class in her acceptance speech. I thought her performance in the Blind Side was fantastic!!
No, she didn’t. The Blind Side is the worst Best Picture nominee EVER.
Stoked that Up and The Cove won. Very happy that Kathryn Bigelow won. I wish that District 9 would have won some awards.
A travesty that Farrah was left out with such great work in Extremeties, The Apostle, Dr. T and the Women, to name a few. Shame on the Academy!
How could they leave Farrah out of the memorial tribute?!
Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t beleive Farrah ever did a commerical film, only made for TV movies.
Dr. T and the Women.
The Apostle
Logan’s Run, Saturn 5…
I think her notable Broadway performance about the rape victim who turns the tables on her attacker was made into a film with her.
Tarantino’s “Basterds” was a better directed movie than “Hurt Locker,” in my amateur opinion. “Hurt Locker” may have been the better movie, but Tarantino has a true artist’s eyes. By the way, let me add my voice to the many expressing satisfaction at “Avatar’s” loss. It was a beautiful movie, a true visual spectacle, but it was far from the best movie of last year.
Tarantino is now the new Martin Scorsese!
First it was Robert Zemeckis now Katheryn Bigelow! Who else is QT going to lose to?
Slightly better than average telecast. Not too many surprises with the exception of the Hurt Locker winning best picture. Baldwin & Martin were a safe bet as hosts but I miss Billy Crystal’s film montage from years past although the piece with Steve and Alec sleeping together was hilarious!!
My biggest question is how will EW find a way to put George Clooney’s face on the cover of the next issue now? Somehow, I think they will find a way though.
It’s George Clooney. Somehow, I will find a way to forgive them.
This was actually an entertaining Oscars. Hopefully Martin and Baldwin host next year.
Meryl Streep got ripped off. Nuff said. It’s nice that people like Sandra Bullock, but it’s absurd that she won that award for that performance over Streep.
ITA.
I’m sure Bullock would completely agree with you. And while I think the real contest was down to Streep as Child and Bullock’s sum career (and significantly higher gross), I can’t say that Bullock didn’t deserve it. Mirren and Streep are already vastly awarded, Mulligan and Sidibe are first (and possibly last) timers and, thus, unliely. Bullock is much beloved by the public, works in front of and behind the camera, and has a very popular and financially lucrative body of work. She’s very well liked in the industry. The Academy has a history of awarding this (see Julia Roberts among others). And never forget that the Oscars is not just about a solitary performance (see Halle Berry winning (!?!) over Nicole Kidman doing *two* worthy roles, and then Kidman winning the following year for a lesser one; IMHO, she was owed an Oscar since To Die For).
I thought it was strange how Tom Hanks delivered the best picture award. It was so fast and non-suspenceful (is that a word?). I wonder if he was told to hurry it up?
I think he was ready to party. I bet he said, “Screw reading the nominees” and opened the envelope immediately. I bet there were angry producers mad at the fact that their names didn’t get read.
*breaks out the tiny violins* The producers got the cash, they don’t need the glory as well.
