Actor Danny Glover is calling for a boycott of Hugo Boss clothing at this Sunday’s Academy Awards after the German fashion house announced plans to close a factory in Cleveland, Ohio, that will leave 300 workers jobless, according to The Wrap. The designer is a red carpet mainstay, dressing stars such as Jeff Bridges, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Paul Giamatti, in recent years. Glover sent a letter to nominees and presenters, telling them that the factory—and thus, the jobs—could have easily been saved. “Hugo Boss says it wants to expand business in this country, and the brand depends on Hollywood cachet,” Glover wrote. “Please tell the world you won’t be wearing Hugo Boss on March 7.”

dear danny glover,
please boycot and protest something far more important. a factory in cleveland does not a tragedy make.
Bruno, I just moved to Cleveland, and it’s a bit disheartening that you write this city off as not having any value. I know that Cleveland is often an easy target because, well, it’s a depressed area facing economic and racial disparity all of the time. Will this Danny Glover thing catch on? Probably not. I’m not that delusional to think Hollywood will be up in arms about this, but c’mon, give Cleveland a break–it certainly deserves one.
Maybe it’s not a tragedy to you Bruno, but I’m sure the 300 people losing their jobs in Cleveland think otherwise.
Sorry, but THIS IS IMPORTANT. AMERICANS ARE LOSING THEIR JOBS AND THEY’RE BEING SHIPPED OVERSEAS. Why would they close the plant if they were making money?
Right … so boycott them and put 300 more people out of jobs … smart move Danny.
Cris, I don’t think you understand–these people are ALREADY out of jobs. Hugo Boss is closing their (money-making) plant here and shipping those jobs overseas, so they can pay Eastern European workers an abysmally low wage–and pocket more of the profit.
The fact that Danny Glover is standing up for American jobs and these workers instead of looking the other way is something to commend him for, not scoff.
I live 3 minutes from this Hugo Boss facility and it’s terrible that they are leaving, to go overseas and pay even lower wages than they pay these 300 workers. Just one more company leaving b/c so few people seem to support AMERICAN workers. Boycotting for one night wouldn’t make these people lose their jobs so Cris is misinformed (or didn’t read the article). Like Kate said, they have already lost the jobs.
I for one will be boycotting Hugo Boss. I will not be paying $300 for the shirt that I was not going to buy!
Danny Glover is just another hollyweirdo with his brain pickled on too much dope
