'American Idol': Contestants' Twitter and Facebook accounts deactivated

Tagged:

For the first time ever, Season Nine of American Idol allowed each of the Top 24 semifinalists to run his or her own Twitter and Facebook page. But on Wednesday, that all came to an end. On each singer’s Twitter account is a message, posted March 3, that reads: “Thanks so much for following me! All my updates from now on will be on our Official AI9 Twitter Page, please follow me there @AI9Contestants.” Likewise, each contestant’s Facebook account will soon be consolidated into one AI9 Contestants fan page. A spokesperson for Fox confirmed to EW that each singer’s individual account would be disappearing in the near future.

So what happened? According to a source close to the show, the switch to group accounts was made because it was impossible to disable the feature on Facebook and Twitter that showed how many “fans” or “followers” each contestant had. And in case you were wondering, Andrew Garcia was way out in front when it came to Twitter “followers.” At last count, he had 12,511 people following his tweets. Only time will tell whether that statistic means anything.

This is American Idol, not Communist China…

    • Wilson

      You’re comment makes no cents.

      • Havinfun

        Communist China edits google etc.

      • niki

        Neither does yours, Wilson.

      • barbo

        It’s “sense,” get some

      • J29

I think I get what JT is trying to say. AI is power hungry and wants too much control. AI is also paranoid and stupid. So they are like Communist China. That country edits everything and only lets be printed what they want the public there to know rather its the truth or not and whats total control over everything. But ya whatever I am going off topic sorta and not sticking to what the article is about.

  • savetherocker

don’t you see andrew garcia will become this years danny gokey!

    • Anna

At least Andrew Garcia had some talent…although I am ashamed to admit, Danny Gokey’s “My best days are ahead of me” is sorta catchy ;)

      • J29

I agree least Andrew has some talent. Even though he probably peaked during Hollywood week. He just seems to be getting worse instead of better. He has yet to top his performance from Hollywood week. That said last weeks performance wasnt too bad. Just wasnt the best of night and more bottom of pack.

  • quinn

andrew garcia only had so many people following him initially cause he used to be a youtube star, and already had a following on youtube/twitter.

    • Donna

who knew gangbangers have twitter accounts?

      • Idol Fan

        BOOO

      • J29

Um okay so let me get this straight Donna if someone is a guy and have tattoos they must be a gangbanger? So this is why you think he is one? I agree with Idol Fan’s comment. BOOO!

I have been been writing commentary on the Internet as a professional freelance writer since 2005 only suggesting that we bring back a show with professional recording artists like viewers who loved music used to enjoy. Sometimes the concert shows like the Midnight Special and Solid Gold would come after the late night talk or SNL and we would enjoy Sly, Loggins and Messina, Natalie Cole, the Doobie Brothers and Jim Croce. These were pros who performed, wrote songs and actually played instruments. I am not even going to care if Idol goes on into perpetuity. Big acts probably want too much to come on, but Idol is advertising not music. The big acts probably want too much but one or two may agree. You have 70′s bands on tour now that would put on an authentic concert with no judges.Leave Idol to the viewers that want to see a Gong Show instead. We are much too inundated in every media format and it is time to go back to basics.

Your sentence structure is a little awkward, dude.

Thanks for the tip Clove, as soon as I put a want ad in the Daily News for an editor,I would appreciate your resume. We will require current experience for a major media corporation.Thank you.

In the ten years or so that Idol as dominated the music and entertainment formats, nobody has discovered the next Joni Mitchell or Van Morrison. I do like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, they both were a find. I spend some time listening to Waylon, Willie, George Jones and Don Williams. Adam Lambert today is interesting, a magnetic personality who could do some talk related work some day. There is something I call innate genetic talent in music. Johnny Mathis and Astrud Giaberto respectively never had formal training, just walked into studio.I know of no acting lesson that the greatest serio comic actor, Jackie Gleason ever had or Red Foxx,
you have to be born with raw talent. These are nice young kids but they are not now nor ever will they be Sarah Vaughn or Jackie
Wilson. They are also skipping the struggling phase of being a great recording artist.Take my advice, even if we have to go to the oldies tours, lets get some real music on.

Know your audience. This isn’t the place where you will be heard.

      • SMJ

        I’m listening.

      • J29

Ya he assumes the ai audience is only ppl over 40. Not to say some ppl under 40 dont enjoy music from the decade and artists or ppl jay mentioned. But the majority of viewers are the 12 to 30 crowd and they prefer stuff more current stuff and the only old school music they like comes from the 80s n 90s.

    • Annie Mack

      Shut up, please.

    • jlb

      Who is this pompous twit?

  • JJ

Idol just wants to have too much control over things. Which was all fine and dandy say first couple seasons when they didnt know if show was gonna last and how idols would do after their seasons. But now you would think with social networking being so popular and idols ratings slipping more and more they want to let each have their own profiles and let each idol post whatever and let as many ppl follow/become fan/etc. Cuz in the end it doesnt matter what Idol does ppl are gonna buy the cds of the ones they like, labels are gonna sign the ones they want and some are gonna fade away never to be heard from again. Some that were Idol n Judges favs.

  • Mike Criley

Andrew Garcia sings terribly. Very forced. Not kind on the ears. He may be popular but if it’s down to singing talent he’ll be out early.

    • Sarah Coller

      Agree totally!

    • Brittany Meyer

He’s like a teddy bear with a likelable personality. There are better singers in the competition.

    • Garth Gallagher

Andrew peaked early. Too bad for him.
