Report: FCC examining never-aired Fox game show 'Our Little Genius'

Categories: Television

The Federal Communications Commission is looking to see if producers of the Fox game show Our Little Genius leaked some answers to potential contestants, reports The New York Times. Through the Freedom of Information Act, the FCC released a letter to the paper that was sent to the commission in December by a parent of a potential contestant; in it, the parent alleges that a production staff member reviewed possible topics with the child and provided answers to at least four questions several days before an episode was to be shot, according to the Times. Fox pulled the first two episodes of Genius from the schedule on Jan. 7—less than a week before its premiere—and released this statement from the show’s executive producer Mark Burnett: “I recently discovered that there was an issue with how some information was relayed to contestants during the pre-production of Our Little Genius. As a result, I am not comfortable delivering the episodes without re-shooting them. I believe my series must always be beyond reproach, so I have requested that Fox not air these episodes.” Genius, which never aired, showcased six- to 12-year-olds answering questions to win money. When contacted by EW.com, a Fox spokesperson had no comment.

'Family Guy' voice actress says Sarah Palin 'does not have a sense of humor'

Categories: Television

Earlier this week, former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin took offense at an episode of Family Guy, which depicted a woman with Down’s Syndrome who said her mother used to be the governor of Alaska. On her Facebook page, Palin called the storyline a “kick in the gut” because she thought it mocked her son, Trig, who has the same genetic condition. Now the voice actress who gave life to the role, a woman who has Down’s Syndrome herself, is speaking out. “I guess former Governor Palin does not have a sense of humor,” Andrea Fay Friedman, the 39-year-old actress who voiced the part of Ellen in Family Guy, told the New York Times. “I thought the line ‘I am the daughter of the former governor of Alaska’ was very funny. I think the word is ‘sarcasm.’” Added Friedman: “I was making fun of Sarah Palin, but not her son.”

Report: Tiger Woods back to therapy after apology, according to PGA Tour honcho

Categories: Misc.

Tiger Woods will be headed back to therapy after speaking publicly for the first time today about his infidelity, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said in a letter obtained by the Associated Press. In a letter to PGA officials explaining why Woods will be speaking today during the Match Play PGA tournament (sponsored by Accenture, the first company to drop its sponsorship deal with the golfer), Finchem reportedly said, “As we understand it, Tiger’s therapy called for a week’s break at this time during which he has spent a few days with his children and then will make his statement before returning. Accordingly, there was very little flexibility in the date for the announcement.” Finchem also noted that Woods’ statement, which will be carried live on television networks and streamed live here on EW.com later this morning, will be over before TV coverage of the Accenture tournament gets underway.

Woods will speak later this morning, at 11 a.m. EST, from the clubhouse at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., home of the PGA Tour. From the media, only AP, Reuters, Bloomberg, and six members of the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA) have been invited to attend and only if they agreed not to ask questions. Additional journalists will be stationed about a mile away at the Marriott Sawgrass outside the PGA Tour complex where they will watch the event on television. They are not allowed inside the gates and cannot ask Woods questions.

Objecting to the strict limitations, yesterday, the GWAA’s board of directors voted overwhelmingly to boycott the event. “To limit the ability of journalists to attend, listen, see, and question Woods goes against the grain of everything we believe,” GWAA president Vartan Kupelian said. The three wire services have accepted their invitations and will attend.

Second largest U.K. theater chain will show Disney's 'Alice in Wonderland,' despite brewing release-window controversy

Theater group Cineworld—Britain’s second-largest chain—announced yesterday that it will indeed carry Tim Burton and Disney’s much-anticipated 3D movie Alice in Wonderland, despite a short theatrical release window before the DVD hits stores, according to Variety. The nation’s first- and third-largest theater chains, Odeon and Vue, are still threatening to boycott showing Alice when it is released globally on March 5, claiming that the shortened release time, which was shortened from the traditional 17 weeks to just 12 weeks, will hurt their profits.
