Ratings: NBC's Winter Olympics broadcasts take seven of last week's top eight spots

In case you haven’t heard, the Winter Olympics are currently airing! And, natch, they’re dominating TV ratings, too! Like the games tend to do, the nightly airings from Vancouver on NBC blew the television competition out of the water last week for the seven days ending Feb. 21, lifting the network to some of its best ratings since it aired its powerful Sunday Night Football franchise last fall. (It’s always sports bringing NBC good ratings these days, right? That, or the Golden Globes.)

The Wednesday airing of the Olympic games, which featured American Shaun White winning a snowboarding gold medal, won gold for the week overall, drawing a stunning 29.4 million viewers. The Saturday airing (26.7 million viewers) and Monday airing (25.2 million viewers) came in silver and bronze, respectively. In fact, all seven of NBC’s primetime airings of the games made the top 10, with only American Idol‘s Tuesday edition (which drew 23.9 million viewers and revealed the first of the Top 24 semi-finalists) managing to interlope and overcome the Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday broadcasts from Vancouver.

Outside of the Olympics, Idol, and CBS’ new Undercover Boss (which showed up at No. 10 with 13.8 million viewers), the rest of the top 20 was rather lackluster, with repeats filling slots or new episodes that went up against the Olympics performing poorly, like ABC’s Desperate Housewives (No. 15, 10.9 million viewers) and Grey’s Anatomy (no. 17, 10.3 million viewers).

The full top 20—complete with viewership totals—is after the jump.

Abbey Road Studios given national landmark status

Categories: Music

London’s Abbey Road Studios were declared a national landmark by the UK government today, CNN reports. The famous music complex, where the Beatles recorded the majority of their music, has received a Grade II listed building, a protected status. The designation follows reports that the cash-strapped EMI was putting Abbey Road up for sale to relieve debt. EMI released a statement over the weekend saying it is not selling the studios but that it is “holding preliminary discussions for the revitalisation of Abbey Road with interested and appropriate third parties.”
