Variety reports that Disney has hired The Proposal director Anne Fletcher and Stepmom writer Jessie Nelson to create a second installment of Enchanted, the studio’s $123 million-grossing 2007 hit about a magical princess (Amy Adams) who is banished to live in modern day Manhattan. Adams and co-stars Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Susan Sarandon have yet to sign on to the project, which is tentatively slated for a 2011 release.

SXSW 2010 film festival to feature 'MacGruber,' 'Cyrus'
The SNL-inspired comedy MacGruber and the indie comedy Cyrus (from writer-directors Mark and Jay Duplass) are two of the films set to debut at the 2010 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, which will take place March 12-20 in Austin, Tex. Other notable pics include Steven Soderbergh’s documentary And Everything Is Going Fine, Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass (starring Ed Norton), and the fest’s opener, the action-comedy Kick-Ass.
Carrie Underwood to make movie debut in 'Soul Surfer'
Country star Carrie Underwood will take on her first big-screen role in Soul Surfer, a drama based on the true story of surfing champion Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm in a shark attack in 2003, when she was just 13. Race to Witch Mountain and Bridge to Terabithia‘s AnnaSophia Robb has been cast as Hamilton; Underwood will play church youth group leader Sarah Hill, while Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt will play Hamilton’s parents. The cast also features Lorraine Nicholson and Kevin Sorbo. Principal photography starts this week in Oahu and Kauai, Hawaii. Sean McNamara will direct from a screenplay he wrote with Deborah Schwartz, Douglas Schwartz (Baywatch co-creator), and Michael Berk based on the best-selling autobiography Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton.
Kathy Bates and Whoopi Goldberg join 'Earthbound'
Variety reports that Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Bates have joined stars Kate Hudson and Gael Garcia Bernal in the cast of Earthbound, a romantic comedy about a young woman who falls in love with her doctor. The project is currently in production in New Orleans.
'The Lost Symbol' movie adaptation in the works
According to Variety, studio Columbia Pictures has hired Oscar nominated screenwriter Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) to pen the big-screen adaptation of The Lost Symbol, the latest bestseller from author Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code). Also on board are mega-producers Brian Grazer and John Calley, who helped bring The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons to theaters. Tom Hanks, who starred in both previous pics, is also expected to sign onto the project, though a deal has yet to be reached.
HBO renews 'Big Love' for fifth season
HBO has ordered a fifth season of its award-winning drama Big Love, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Ratings for the current fourth season of the show, which follows a polygamous family headed by ambitious businessman (Bill Paxton) and his three wives (Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny, and Ginnifer Goodwin), are up an average of 13 percent over last year. The series’ main cast is expected to return — with the exception of Dear John star Amanda Seyfried, who announced her departure in December.
Melissa Rycroft becomes 'Entertainment Tonight' correspondent
Former Bachelor and Dancing With the Stars contestant Melissa Rycroft, 26, has joined Entertainment Tonight as a special correspondent, according to People. Her beat will include parties, award shows, and premieres.
Christian Bale, Rachel McAdams on board for next Terrence Malick film
Christian Bale, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko are set to star in Terrence Malick’s next film, according to ScreenDaily. Plot details aren’t announced but the project will start shooting this fall on the romance. Meanwhile, Malick’s father/son drama The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, will be released later in 2010.
Evan Farmer named new host of 'CMT Top 20 Countdown'
Evan Farmer — who TV audiences might remember as a member of the boy band in MTV’s first made-for-TV movie 2GE+HER or more recently as a host/handyman on TLC’s While You Were Out — has been tapped as the new emcee of CMT Top 20 Countdown. Farmer’s first episode airs this Friday at 11 a.m. ET. Lance Smith, who joined CMT as its first VJ in 2001, and went on to host more than 400 episodes of the show, left the network last December to pursue acting.
