Jamie Foxx's rep: 'No truth whatsoever' to 'Idol' rumors

Categories: Movies, Television, TV Biz

Though Jamie Foxx’s name has been bandied about as a possible replacement for Simon Cowell on American Idol next year, his publicist says there’s “no truth whatsoever” to the rumors that he’s been approached for the job. “Never has been.” Those behind-the-scenes at the show say it’s still far too early to consider anyone a finalist for the gig, though Sirius shock-jock Howard Stern has gotten some major mileage this week out of discussing his own possible inclusion on the shortlist on the air. Other possibilities mentioned in the press have included music executives Tommy Mottola and Guy Oseary.

Ratings: 'American Idol,' 'Human Target' back on track

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

Good news for Fox: In Week 2 of the time slot switcheroo for American Idol and Human Target, Hollywood Week with Ellen DeGeneres saw the 9 p.m. Idol increase its audience by roughly 4 million viewers from last Wednesday, while Human Target grew by about 1 million to claim the 8 p.m. hour in its first head-to-head with CBS’ The New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried. (It’s still, however, about 1 million shy of its last airing at 9 p.m.) NBC should be happy (or sad?) knowing that a repeat of Law & Order: SVU outperformed The Jay Leno Show in the 10 p.m. slot. The CW continued to score a nice turnout for encore episodes of Life Unexpected.

He was 40 years old. “At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family,” reads a message on the official website of the designer’s company. Rumors have begun to circulate online, but officials say the the cause of death remains unknown. “We’re devastated and I hope you understand that out of respect to his family and his colleagues we’re not going to be making any further statement,” said the designer’s spokewsoman in a statement.

McQueen rose to fame in the ’90s, earning a reputation for his impeccably tailored avant-garde looks and iconoclastic fashion shows. He got a relatively traditional start on Savile Row, designing for Givenchy before creating his own label under the Gucci umbrella in 2001. McQueen’s designs were red-carpet regulars, especially on Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Moss, and Naomi Campell. A few of McQueen’s most famous works include Gwyneth Paltrow’s see-through 2002 Oscar dress and the “armadillo” shoes worn by Lady Gaga in her 2009 “Bad Romance” music video.

Since his death was announced earlier today, several celebrities have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the designer.

DitaVonTeese: “Rest in peace, Mr. McQueen.”

Joel Madden: “R.I.P. Alexander McQueen. You were one of the best man. Always hoped to meet you.”

Jon Robin Baitz has two plays bound for Broadway, including one on Hollywood legend Robert Evans

Categories: Stage

Playwright Jon Robin Baitz, who created ABC’s Brothers and Sisters as well as the successful Off Broadway plays The Substance of Fire and A Fair Country, reportedly has two new stage plays bound for Broadway in the next year. Producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel announced plans to bring Baitz’s Love and Mercy — about a former matinee idol turned ambassador, his screenwriter wife, and their novelist daughter — to Broadway during the 2010-11 season. The show would be Baitz’s Broadway debut.

Separately, the New York Times reported that Baitz is writing a play about the checkered career of Robert Evans, a child star turned the studio exec and film producer behind both hits (The Godfather) and flops (The Cotton Club). Evans, 79, is a notorious raconteur of the Hollywood scene, as he proved in a 1994 memoir and 2002 documentary that were both titled The Kid Stays in the Picture (he has also written an unpublished follow-up memoir, The Fat Lady Sang). Producers hope to mount the Evans-inspired show in the next year, under the direction of film/stage veteran Richard Eyre (Notes on a Scandal).

Judge clears sale of Terminator franchise to Pacificor

Categories: Movie Biz, Movies

Reuters reports that a U.S. bankruptcy judge has cleared the sale of the Terminator franchise to hedge fund Pacificor in a deal worth $29.5 million. In a hearing in Los Angeles today, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Ernest Robles said that the sale to Pacificor would offer the best solution for the company’s creditors. Current owner Halcyon Holding had acquired the franchise in 2007 but fell into bankruptcy in August. Sony and Lions Gate Entertainment had jointly bid for the Terminator rights and were not selected; the judge today overruled their objection and cleared the way for the Pacificor deal.
