Howard Stern addresses 'American Idol' rumors

Howard Stern said on his satellite radio show on Monday that Fox is considering him as a possible replacement for Simon Cowell when American Idol‘s tenth season begins in 2011. “There’s not a better job on the planet than judging that f—ing karaoke contest,” The Wrap quotes Stern as saying. He added, “They’d have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton of dough.” The shock jock was responding to a New York Post report from last Friday suggesting that he is the leading candidate to replace Cowell on the show’s judging panel in 2011. Stern’s $500 million five-year contract with Sirius XM expires at the end of this year. Cowell announced last month he will not return to Idol next year, and will instead bring his X-Factor singing competition to Fox’s fall 2011 schedule.

Stern would not elaborate this morning on the status of his negotiations with Idol, saying, “I’m not going to comment about any discussions I might or might not have had.” Last week, a source close to the show discussed the Stern rumors with EW, saying “the search has just begun, nor are there any front-runners at this time.” Furthermore, “nobody’s going to be offered a job [as a permanent Idol judge] for a while,”  the source added. “We’re doing a very thorough search.” A call to Stern’s rep was not returned.

JD has such a way with words :)

      • YES

        hahahaha….Ack ACk

      • rerun

I still think Howard shld give JD $50k to make a movie and make sure they shoot behind the scenes- specifically to watch JD directing. That movie wld make its money back so fast.

    • Shel

This news report, and “response” then lack of response seems to point quite obviously to a made up “self-promotion” by Stern & his reps. And, for all his fans who think he would be great at it, he sure sounds like he despises this “karaoke” contest to me. Being a professional negative insult artist does not make you the right choice for a show like AI.

      • DC

Howard doesn’t despise American Idol. It’s actually one of his favorite shows.

  • Bflo

NOOOOOOOOOO! I will STOP watching the show immediately if this happens.

    • Joe

right… all it will take is one episode and you will be ever more faithful in watching idol.

Why does everyone love Simon? Because he speaks his mind and he’s honest about what he thinks.

Howard Stern, the exact same. No other celebrity in the world of entertainment is more honest, has witty humor, or is more entertaining than Howard Stern.

I did not agree with Ellen being cast especially since she doesn’t know anything about music except for stupid little dances. She has a talk show for petes sake. I hope she fails 6 ways to Sunday!

If they wanted someone who has a huge background in music (disc jokey for years, jump started numerous careers including Sugar Ray), Howard Stern is the only personality that would make this work. His fan base of 10 million alone is a valuable asset.

      • Tom

Stern will be asking the contestants to flash their tatas. He’s not suitable for this type of entertainment.

      • Pat

Howard Stern is NOT a good role model for young adults! He does not respect women. I thought he was a Pig back in the 70s in Philly! would stop watching the show.

      • Scott

No DJ since the 60’s has anything to do with music selection. HS is no more qualified than the listeners. He is rude for rudeness sake. I have no problem with Ellen because she now represents the everyman. But, Simon needs to be replaced with a knowledgeable music insider. Not with a shock jock.

      • Jason

And look how long Sugar Ray lasted.

      • nick

how many artists did that she-male ellen help out? she is a no-talent hack, all he does is entertain housewives sitting on their butt all day watching tv because they hate their lives and have nothing better to do but sit through an hour of ellen’s dribble between their soap operas… If i were howard I wouldn’t even entertain the idea of joining that show, he’s CLASSIER than that show and any of the people on there… NICK OUT! Howard is a broadcasting genius, period. He knows how to entertain, period. If this were to even happen (which people it won’t) he would know how to act on a television show for families, he’s crude, not an idiot. And as for all you people who say you woulndn’t watch the show if he joined. you. are. liars.

      • Bflo

clearly Joe, you do not know me. I will not watch Howard Stern on anything let alone AI. Simon speaks his mind and I appreciate his knowledge. Stern is a crude sexist with no talent. Saying he discovered Sugar Ray is hardly an endorsement. That band sucked. There are plenty of other people in the music industry who can fill Simon’s shoes–record execs, producers, etc. It doesn’t need to be a big name, it would probably be better if it wasn’t. All Howard Stern would bring to the show is the low life audience of his radio show. No thanks!

      • Shel

Wow, Joe – NO other artist in the world is more entertaining??? Glad you are such a big fan, but that is just opinion – you get that, right? And you’re opinion does not get to rule the day, thank goodness. lol

      • wakeforce

        Howard Stern is a role model for the r e t a r d s who watch his show!

      • JODIBELL

NICK, YOU ARE A WOMANIZING JERK, JUST LIKE STERN. I LOVE TO WATCH ELLEN. HER SENSE OF HUMOR AND FAIRNESS ARE SOMETHING HARD TO FIND ON TV ANY MORE. AND SHE DOES HELP THE MUSIC INDUSTRY BY HAVING FAMOUS MUSICIANS ON THE SHOW AND BY GIVING NEW TALENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE SEEN AND HEARD. AND I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I AM NOT A STAY AT HOME HOUSEWIFE SITTING ON THE COUCH ALL DAY WHILE SOME SLOB “TAKES CARE OF ME”. I WORK HARD AND MAKE MORE THAN ENOUGH TO SUPPORT MY SELF. AND I AM NO LIAR. I WILL NEVER WATCH ANY PROGRAM WITH HOWARD STERN ON IT. I THINK IT IS A SHAME THAT A SLEAZE BUCKET LIKE HIM HAS THE POSITION THAT HE DOES SO THAT HE CAN POISON OTHERS WITH HIS PORNOGRAPHIC TRIPE.

    • Bill

You should have already stopped watching this stupid show after the first season.

      • Bflo

then I would have missed out on great talent like Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, David Cook, etc.

No one forces you to watch or read about AI. So why post a message about a stupid show you clearly dislike?

    • Dianna

I’m with you!!! This guy is not a good replacement for Simon. If Howard Stern takes Simon’s place, I doubt the show would last past next year.

      • abe

Yeah I bet, look at Survivor. What are they on like season 26?

    • luvmichaeljohns

me too he is an ass.

    • Diane

Sorry…if Stern gets the job, we will not be watching Idol next year. Yuk…

      • josh

You will watch, hoping to see how bad a fit howard is.
then you’ll be disgusted by the first few comments howard tells to the worthless contestants.
then you’ll laugh ’cause he just said what you were thinking.
then you won’t believe you are a fan of howard!
next you will text into the shows vote line the same as you have for the last decade….

      • YEA YEA

        Diane,
you will be curious and watch and then probably continue to watch. and the show will be bigger then ever! it obviously has a base of fans that continue to watch and Stern would bring in even more people. AI will be even bigger then it is now…and he will save the show from being cancelled.

      • AJ

        Diane,
I’m with you. We’re “occasional” Idol watchers at this point, and I can guarantee that the show will no longer be on in our house if Stern is on it (and no, I won’t be watching it just out of curiosity as others have suggested–seeing Howard Stern once in my life is too often). Idol is so popular with teenagers that I can’t believe FOX would even consider adding such an obscene person to the cast.

    • Salome Reid

I agree with you. But I never watched the show from the start but they will loose more credentials as a music search show.

  • ktwolf

I wouldn’t watch American Idol if Howard Stern was a judge.

    • pJ

I agree..these contestants are teens & young adult (including many hot babes) Though Simon is Simon he civil when it comes to physical appearances ..Howard would need shock therapy to be…I’d rather have Mike Judge as Judge..then he could do Beavis & But_t_head ..Mr Anderson..hippy teacher Mr Van Dreissen..Hank Hill…

  • Mike

He will be the greatest judge ever! The funniest man alive!

    • Pat

Funny? He’s a PIG! Ask his X wife!

      • YES

Pat, u would tune in every day….and then b*tch and blog about how much u hate him the next. I wouldnt be surprised if you listen to him now….

    • Zakry

      ..or ask his current wife!

    • squibber

Mike; you must be a teenager with no childen. To put that pervert on
american idol would be the end. Ar’nt the morals of this country down the toilet enough already.

  • Riley Martin

    The Targzissians are obviously reptilian.

    • mike depike

      Oh Kwah Tanzian Wha

      • cb

        Oni Sayer Won

  • Jose

He did not confirm – the rumor in the post was all wrong. He was never nor would he be considered for the job. American Idol couldn’t sell Ads with him as a judge plus he’s a horrible judge of talent.

    • Not Jose

Horrible judge of talent? Howard’s advocated for literally hundreds of musical acts over the years, including people like Kid Rock, Live, White Zombie, and legions more.

      • Mick

        I don’t believe you. Sorry.

      • ktwolf

“Horrible judge of talent? Howard’s advocated for literally hundreds of musical acts over the years, including people like Kid Rock, Live, White Zombie, and legions more.” Proves the point, doesn’t it?

      • Jimm

Howard’s advocated for horrible talent over the years, including people like Kid Rock, Live, White Zombie, and legions more. Howard, don’t use jose as our publicist

      • Gale

        Kid Rock?? Yuck.

    • cb

ads? 6 million new sirius subscriptions since 2006 should tell you something

      • Carla

It doesn’t mean that people are buying these subscriptions because of Howard Stern — There is a lot of good music on Sirius — we subscribe — we don’t listen to Howard Stern — he is a pig and he treats women like sh__? I don’t know his ex-wife, but I bet she could tell us a lot of things — Tell howard to take all of his “Dough” and go away.

      • cb

The the year he joined the number of subscriptions increased by 82% and surpassed XM which until then had been the leader. We’re not even talking about ads which people hear casually, these are new customers who wanted to pay to listen.

  • LeighHigh

I think that would be a huge mistake.

  • darclyte

In the early 1980s when he was a DJ in Detroit, Stern often had a segment that was similar to AI. He would have aspiring singers and bands perform for a panel of 3 judges (sound familiar?) Typically the judges were record company reps, talent scouts (yes, they used to have those,) and recording artists like Detroit native, Mitch Ryder. I see a couple of problems with Stern and AI. One, he doesn’t like to travel. If they relocate from Hollywood to NY, it would improve his odds of joining, but would he fly out to the “audition cities?” Two, although he’s had all of the judges and Ryan on his show, he has little respect for Randy (for saying nothing,) and Ryan (for being more than vanilla bland.) Three, he seems to have Simon’s old (and Kara’s current) preconceived notion that the “look” is just as if not more important than the voice. Could he separate the voice from the “package?” Despite being a talk show host, he has played music as a DJ for years and was in a band in his youth, (Mark McGrath’s band Sugar Ray actually covered one of his songs.) So, he does have knowledge of popular music, and he does seem to like “pop music” such as P!nk for instance, but while he would be brutally honest like Simon, and he is a HUGE fan of AI, would he be a good fit?

    • cb

exactly, Stern even invented the show!

      • ?

        Stern invented talent shows?

      • cb

AI is a copy of a segment stern did in the 80s. See also Jaywalking, Are you smarter than a 5th grader, and you have to do something first to get your plugs. All rip offs.

  • annie

Bet he gets some female contestants to remove their clothes.

  • ERIN

IMAGINE HOWARD AND ELLEN ON ONE JUDGING PANEL!!! COME ON RATINGS GOLD

  • christine

with the addition of ellen, this show has proven that the role of judges is completely nominal. why have people who know what they’re talking about when you can get the most famous people possible to try and draw in ratings.

this show has gone so far downhill, it’s pathetic

    • LeighHigh

Paula Abdul is a dancer who pretends to sing. I don’t think she’s all that knowledgeable. I think the judges are only good for getting the contestants in front of us anyhow. I know what I like to hear and often (very) don’t agree with the judges.

      • Lance

Oh please, you just hate Paula. I’m sure she’s done alot more in the music industry than Ellen.

  • Dyanna

Well as long as the contestants are female, have great bodies and are showing a lot of skin, he would be great.

  • Tim

Howard would be a reason to tune in!

  • M.R. in L.A.

I hate AI. I never watch it.
Stern as judge would change that…just saying…

  • Nick

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
