Robin Williams' 'Cop Out' lawsuit dismissed

Tagged: ,

A Los Angeles judge has thrown out actor Robin Williams’s $6 million lawsuit against indie studio Gold Circle Films, according to court papers filed Thursday. Williams sued Gold Circle back in October 2008, claiming that the production company promised him a $6 million “pay or play” fee for a buddy cop comedy then titled A Couple of Dicks. Gold Circle ultimately decided not to produce the movie, which was subsequently acquired by Warner Bros. and renamed Cop Out for stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan (in theaters Feb. 26). Williams maintained that Gold Circle owed him the $6 million — “pay or play” agreements guarantee that an actor gets paid even if the movie is never made. But Gold Circle managed to prove in court that the two parties never entered “an enforceable agreement as a matter of law.”

“It’s unfortunate that Robin Williams’s attorneys insisted on pursuing this lawsuit when it never should have been filed in the first place,” Gold Circle’s attorney, Michael D. Holtz, told EW. Holtz said he intends to seek recovery of the studio’s costs and attorneys’ fees. Williams’s reps did not immediately return calls for comment.

Who would Robin Williams have played? Tracy Morgan or Sean William Scott’s part?

  • Casey

Well at any rate the film looks God-awful so he can hold his head up about that.

Because Robin Williams has never made a terrible movie.

Come on, doesn’t he have enough money?!

Robin Williams is one of the few actors in Hollywood I legit can’t tolerate in the slightest. What bothers me besides the horrible movies is that I still don’t think he gets how racially insensitive his comedy routines can be either.

You don’t even like One Hour Photo?

Almost every comedien’s routines are racially insensitive. If you think he’s the only one then you are very naive.

You’re obviously a child. Though Williams’ image in the 90s was that of a ‘family-friendly’ actor. He has a history of drug abuse and his stand up routine is racially bigoted, sexually charged and raunchy. That’s his comedic style, and if you can’t see that for what it is, stick with “safe” comedians like… sorry I can’t think of any funny comedians who aren’t considered “edgy”.

    i do it

@ jiangieb – Your comment has to be the most insensitive, despicable piece of written petulance I have ever come across. Saying “I do it” to the EW community in regard to such an egregious matter as this is not only a slight against the website’s readers, it is tantamount to a denial of the legitimacy of “Roots” – for shame, jiangieb. The simple idea that you would even possibly utter such a remark to your closest friends is gut-wrenching; however, displaying your sick, abhorrent juxtaposition on this matter for the entire world to see is nothing short of a laxative-induced nightmare. I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul.

I am a white female married to a black man for over 36 years and both of us love Robin Williams, both in comedy and drama.
Since this film is getting rough reviews, then Robin will be just fine. He has so much more ahead of him, careerwise. His recent heart surgery and successful recovery tells me that his best work is yet to come. He is the best!
