Brittany Murphy cause of death announced

Initial autopsy results for actress Brittany Murphy, who died suddenly at age 32 on December 20, have been released.

According to the L.A. county coroner (via People), Murphy died from multiple drug intoxication (“only prescription and over-the-counter meds”), pneumonia, and iron deficiency anemia. His ruling is that the death was accidental, but he tells People that it could have been avoided had the actress seen a doctor. “Murphy was planning on seeing a doctor, but she unfortunately passed away before she did,” Assistant Chief Ed Winter told People. “This was a case of a person with pneumonia who was anemic (having a low blood count) who was taking medication when she should’ve been getting medical treatment.”

Murphy’s husband, Simon Monjack, told authorities that his wife was taking the painkiller Vicoprofen and antidepressant Fluoxetine to deal with severe menstrual cramps; A full autopsy report is expected within two weeks.

So the woman who never did drugs and didn’t have an eating disorder died of drugs and malnutrition. How’s that lawsuit going, Monjack?

    • bahlooga

      Look’s like Murphy’s Law ….

      … has been revoked

      YEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

      • gina

        or repealed even

      • leviray

        baddd taste!

    • Breckster82

before you start jumping to conclusions, anemia can be caused by several things other than malnutrition as a result of an eating disorder. second, it was widely known she was on prescription drugs at the time of her death. the drug people kept referring to was an alleged cocaine addiction. while the study doesn’t say which drugs they found in her system, it’s better to wait before the final autopsy before passing judgment.

      • c.lawson

I have friends and family who are anemic and don’t have eating disorders-as Breckster said: it can be caused by numerous things. I think people WANT to believe that all celebs are drugged out basketcases…maybe they are jealous of them because of the seemingly glam lifestyle they live… but I think it is unfair to cast judgment simply BECAUSE they are a celebrity. If there turns out to be illicit drugs in her system-then YES, blame it on being the stereotypical wasteoid celeb, but it seems as though this was a mixture of poor judgment (not going to the doc when you feel that ill), stress and depression (which both exacerbate, and cause, illness).

      • YeahRight

Taking too many RX drugs, RX, drugs that aren’t yours, and starving yourself will get you dead. Period. She was very talented. Her husband is an opportunistic fungus and didn’t get his wife to the hospital. She was very, very sick. And people who take drugs that suppress your breathing (NARCOTICS and BENZOs for example) while they have dangerous fevers are risking their lives. She looked very frail and anyone with a brainstem knows she didn’t eat. She was a normal size in Clueless and was skin and bones when she died. This should be a cautionary tale. First, don’t marry a d bag, second, don’t take dangerously strong drugs like vicoprofen for menstrual cramps along with a cocktail of OTC and RX drugs. Third. EAT or you might just die.

      • virg15370

Look she was taking a strong painkiller and antidepressant for mentrual cramps???? Ok she doesnt have a drug problem, sort of like saying Tiger Woods doesnt have marital problems. Thats what they make midol for, never heard of anyone accidentally dying from midol lol

      • Shae

Hey Virg, until you have severe cramps from your period don’t sit and assume that there are no cases of people who have bad enough cramps to require a pain killer, and some people do get depression with their cycle. I don’t think you have ever been in this position since you are judging.

    • kdurnin

wow… judge not lest ye be judged yourself… FACTS first: because someone passes from “multiple drug interaction” doesn’t mean they have a drug problem. it’s easier than one thinks to UNKNOWINGLY combine medications that when taken together are lethal Secondly:anemia is caused by one’s body not producing enough red blood cells. Most causes of iron-deficient anemia are not because of starving yourself… GET EDUCATED before you open your mouth. And, most importantly, SHE is someone’s daughter, partner, friend, etc. Disregard her fame… She was someone special to many around her I am sure. She deserves respect. And you know, who cares if it was illicit drugs???? that does NOT make her ANY LESS of a person than you.

      • Mayor MacCheez

KDURIN hit thr nail on the head.. Please, folks, get your facts straight before you go blasting your opinions and conjecture all over the web and make jack-asses of yourselves. Just about all these postings make me want to slap the living crap out of all of you just looking for a blog to give meaning to your lives. Is this what you live for?! C’mon folks. Where’s your civility and respect for someone you supposedly admired and regailed. The woman was a human being with a family and real health issues. Should we look at your impending death with the same skeptical disrespect. I wonder how your family and loved ones will feel when I come along and speculate that you died huffing spray-paint cans with a bad trick. Is there any hope for the human species? Not too sure now…

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ATLEAST YOU HAVE SOME COMMEN SENCE AND COMPASHION.PEOPLE CAN BE SO CRUEL IF YOU CANT SAY SOMETHING NICE THEN DONT SAY NOTHING AT ALL.MY HEART GOES OUT TO HER FAMILY.

show some respect! act like you’ve got some sense. behave accordingly and you shall be redeemed in the eyes of your fellow man.

  • Ambient Lite

I suppose Monjack was surprised that contrary to his assertion, “Warner Bros. Studios” was NOT listed as cause of death on the autopsy.

    • skiiboski

I thought it was “Hollywood” that killed her?

My guess, totally unsupported by anything except a hunch– fatty husband is guilty of shenanigans.

      • Melissa

I am tending to agree with the comment about Brittany’s husband- my hunch too is that he is an opportunist- come on!! You have to sue someone??? Give me a break!!! I would not doubt if his whole marriage to her was not to merely support himself.
I loved Brittany in her movies, but you know what, it goes with the territory of Hollywood and all that attention seeking stuff- yes it is stressful and yes you get rejected from time to time. All a part of the price.

  • Blair

WHAT?!? She’s dead? When did this happen????

    • Kaleigh

      seriously? where’ve you been??

      r.i.p. brittany

  • Caleb

really? we’re talking about the untimely passing of another human being and it somehow inspires the commenters to joke. real classy.

    • Fatima

The magic of the computer age :(

    • Q

No, we’re talking about the husband of a woman who died much too young, from very avoidable causes, who has spent most of his time since her death trying to blame others, make excuses and cash in. Who’s joking? Not me.

      • AF

Blaming others is actually part of the grieving process. He is looking for the cause of a senseless death.

      • c.lawson

True AF- most people will point fingers in all different directions to try to explain the untimely death of a loved one in an attempt to gain solace and perchance an explanation. I’m guessing that he’s also blamed himself-even if he hasn’t said so straight out. I know when I have lost people, I have thought “if only I had_____, then maybe they would still be here…” people look high and low to try to find peace in times of grieving, and many people turn to blaming all kinds of things, people, situations etc. to find it.

      • blare

she died from multiple drug intoxication

    • Your mom

      You stay classy, San Diego…

    • Ambient Lite

      Gotta go with Q.
It’s sad that she died so young, her body was so abused and worn out. But I think it’s perfectly fair to criticize that slimeball husband of hers.

  • Lynny

I feel even worse knowing it would have been so easily prevented with a trip to the hospital. Wow- so sad.

  • E.

Why are we hearing about this at all? Why do we think we have the right to such private information?

    • Kendra

Because if you’re curious about someone’s life – be they famous or not famous – you have a right to access public records. Anything the police departments do is “technically” accessible by the public, hence coroner’s reports can be read by all.

      • YeahRight

She was a celebrity. She died young. Heath Leger and Michael Jackson died in a very similar fashion. That is why it is news. Hopefully it will discourage RX drug abuse or excuse me, “multiple drug intoxication.”

  • joey

IS MOM REALLY THAT STUPID TO MAKE THE COMMENT THAT BRITTANY NEVER DID DRUGS IN HER LIFE, THAT ABOUT SUMMS UP THE PROBLEM BRITTANY S MOM COULDNT EVEN IDENTIFY THAT HER DAUGHTER WAS POPPING MULTIPLE DRUGS. ME AS A FATHER IF MY DAUGHTER HAS ONE DRINK I CAN SPOT IT, WHAT KIND OF FRIENDS OF HUSBAND DONT STEP IN, ANOTHER STAR DIES BECAUSE IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO POP PILLS AND SNORT COKE OR SPEED, NOW ALL HER LOVED ONES WANT TO SAY HOW TRAGIC, WHATS TRAGIC IS THAT NOBODY STEPPED IN TO HELP THIS GIRL.

    • Maserda

People are confusing the definition of drugs. I believe Brittany’s mom was trying to say that she was not taking drugs like pot, cocaine, or heroin. However, she was taking prescription meds for depression, which was a source of treatment. Yes, it’s easy to abuse prescription meds accidentally, as Heath Ledger died of similar circumstances a year ago. Does that mean he was an addict? No, it was an unfortunate accident, like what happened to Brittany. So please, don’t accuse her of “popping pills” when it was not the case (even according to the autopsy report)

      • Q

What if I want to accuse Ledger of also popping pills? You’re further confusing the definition of drugs. What difference does it make if someone is a coke head or takes too many pills that were prescribed (or obtained) without proper medical attention? Still dead!
I’m not trying to say this is all Murphy’s mom’s fault, but I thought we’d all gotten to a place where we understood that prescription drugs are even more abused than street drugs, and potentially more deadly. This woman would be alive today had she gone to the doctor. Instead, someone probably just called in a script. It just makes the problem worse when you suggest that things like this aren’t part of Hollywood’s drug problem.

      • niki

Maserda- I think if someone is taking enough prescription drugs that they accidentally OD, then they ARE addicted. Why do you think they call them “controlled substances”? You don’t abuse prescription drugs by accident- you abuse them because you are addicted.

      • YeahRight

Death by MULTIPLE DRUG INTOXICATION.That is an accidental overdose by someone abusing RX drugs or self medicating. The MD should lose his license if ALL of those drugs were prescribed to her by the same MD.

    • liz

Please!!! U act like u know everything about ur daughter. She’s probably drinking and doing everything in the book having a father like u. We all see the best in our children and see what we want. Britney died of pneumonia, not a drug overdose. Get the facts straight. There were no illegal drugs found in her system. Just because someone decides to take painkillers for cramps doesn’t make them a drug addict. I hope u never find out what ur daughter is really like when ur not around, but hey at least she alive to defend herself…LOSER!!

    • SteveStrifeX

I CAN PRETEND TO SOUND IMPORTANT TOO IF I USE ONLY CAPS!

    • damianos

denial is 10/10nths of her straw she should not have been mixing

  • Mike

    Close your quote, Leah!

  • trashtvloverytvlover

addicts get good at hiding things, i feel for her poor mother who now is probably in the sad situation of second guessing everything and doing the “what if?” torture that always follows in the death of an addict. so sad.

  • DJ

That’s right, everybody blame the husband. Did he tie her down and force the pills down her throat? He may be a total slimeball who enabled her habit but untimately the blame rest on her.

    • YeahRight

Addicts often chose people they can manipulate.

  • Jason

I was gonna comment about this but I don’t really care for this woman so I don’t know why I’m still typing…………………………..

    • mishka

Then allow to take your spot: pneumonia+anaemia and no f*cking time to call a doctor while you’re full of $$$? What kind of BS is that!
      Tinseltown killed chubby Tai, period.

      • c.lawson

…did she know about the anemia? … many people who have it don’t even realize it… and LOTS of people will brush off all kinds of respiratory infections as “just being a cold” so they don’t bother to call the doc as they are in the mindset that it will just pass… I know I have done it, and I have also had it backfire on me and turn into something worse..granted I didn’t die-but all the same, it’s easy to believe that a little rest and some tea will solve the problem when that usually IS the case. Turns out this was a fatal miscalculation.

  • JillS

Saying a hollywood star “never did drugs” is like saying a fat kid never had cake. It goes w/ the territory. No surprise here.

    • Nikki

Actually some fat kids don’t like cake. They like ice cream or pizza or………………….

  • znachki

Actually pneumonia and a combo of drugs sounds an awful lot like Heath Ledger…

    • Maserda

I was thinking the same thing.

  • Janice

Do they prescribe anti-depressants for PMS??? I’m fairly certain that’s shady.

    • veronica

While I don’t know specifically about anti-depressants and PMS, drugs often have more functions other than just what they are most commonly known and used for and so are sometimes prescribed for things one might not think they would be. For example, dermatologists will sometimes prescribe birth control for women with acne problems. Like I said, I have no idea if this was the case in this situation, but I could imagine it being a possibility.

      • c.lawson

Yes, they do prescribe certain antidepressants for PMS actually. One of the first was called Sarafem (which was just low-dose Prozac with a fancy name….) it helped women who suffer from depressive mood that is present -but not so severe to need higher (or even regular) doses of anti-depressants, but that may become exacerbated by PMS.

    • c.lawson

I should add they are actually treating something called PMDD not PMS. But PMDD is often mistaken for PMS, as the symptoms are the same, but with PMDD they are far more pronounced. All this aside, it’s a shame that it all boils down to something that was easily treatable had she just gone to the doc.—but how many times can we ALL say “ohh, I just have a *insert disease here*…I will take some *nyquil, tylenol…etc* and be fiiiine”. That’s why they say things like ‘if symptoms persist or get worse, see a physician…’ I think we often brush off things off as being so common (like a cold) that we fail to recognize that even a cold can blossom into something much worse if you don’t take care of yourself. While these things usually do just pass on their own, I think that in general, a lot of people do a poor job of properly taking care of themselves when it comes to “simple” or “common” illnesses-especially when there are underlying disorders.

    • kurt

yes they do.Go to webmd,do your research

    Nice going, Big Pharma!
