Avatar‘s Laz Alonso and Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat are set to star in the political romantic comedy Love, Barack. The story follows the star-crossed love between Sherawat’s Aretha Gupta, an Obama volunteer coordinator, and Alonso’s character, who serves the same position for McCain’s camp, during the 2008 presidential election. The cast is rounded out by American Gangster‘s Ruby Dee, comedian Gerry Bednob (The 40 Year Old Virgin) and Loretta Divine (Crash). New Jack City‘s Doug McHenry will direct the film, penned by If You Only Knew scribe Gary Goldstein. Govind Menon and William Keenan will produce under their U.S.-India company, Nuclear Mango alongside Vikram Singh from Split Image Pictures.

Its kind of ridiculous how big this Avatar thing is. So what if he’s an Avatar cast member? No one is going to know what he looked like, they won’t see the trailer and go, “hey, isnt that the guy from Avatar?” “Ya, hes that blue guy!” He was never shown as a human. No one cares if he was from Avatar. It’d be like saying, Shutter Island, starring the iceberg from Titanic.
I don’t know what’s worse, the constant need to throw Avatar on everything or the description of this movie. “Love, Barack” Really???? That’s the BEST you could do?

It’s Loretta Devine, not “Divine.” And Ruby Dee is iconic…”American Gangster’s Ruby Dee” just sounds ridiculous – no one associates her with that role.
I think it’s because she was nominated for an Oscar for that particular performance in American Gangster that she’s billed that way. I guess the wording could have been better.
I have been on set for the movie production, and the whole crew is amazing. Look for me in the film!
