'Sex and the City' creator directing Anita Bryant biopic for HBO

HBO is developing a biopic about anti-gay activist Anita Bryant with Sex and the City creator Darren Star at the helm, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The former beauty queen and Christian singer became a crusader against gay rights in the ’70s when she fought a Miami-Dade County ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. “As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children,” she said. When she succeeded, she promised to “seek help and change for homosexuals, whose sick and sad values belie the word ‘gay,’ which they pathetically use to cover their unhappy lives.”

    What a nut!

Sweet Baby Jesus… Can’t we make it a big gay musical?

  • Yes

I was hoping that description of her would end with “…and then her child told her they were gay…”

…and is in “talks” with Sarah Jessica Parker to star?!?! I don’t think anyone will be dying to see this. Boo on HBO and Darren.

An Anita Bryant biopic? What a horrible idea. I hope they don’t rewrite history to try and make her into some kind of hero or saint. She used her “faith” to spread hatred and intolerance — i hope they make that the focus of this picture.

      What you said.

I doubt the gay-friendly creator of ‘Sex and the City’ is going to make a pro-Bryant biopic.

Guys, I really doubt that Darren Star is going to paint a positive portrait of Anita Bryant- you needn’t worry. He will show her for what she is- a sad, small minded individual.

I’m not sure how I feel about this…I’m sure the portrayal will be negative, but I’m not really one to sit through 2 hours watching a horrible person be horrible. Unless of course it’s uhh…Hans Landa or someone fun. Anita Bryan is no fun. Her life/message/story is depressing. And in a sure-to-be negative look at all of that, I imagine I’ll just leave the theater with a bad taste in my mouth.

I agree with sdr. With Darren Star, the guy who was behind Sex and the City and Melrose Place is not going to do a glowing heroic protrait of her. I thing there is potential for a really great dark comedy here.

The sad thing is, Anita Bryant’s legacy of hate is alive and well. Hopefully this biopic will inspire more people to get involved in the fight for equality.
