Judge rejects Roman Polanski's request to be sentenced in Switzerland

Categories: Movies

On Friday, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied director Roman Polanski’s request to be sentenced while he remains under house arrest in Switzerland. This upheld the judge’s prior ruling demanding that the director return to the United States in order to reach resolution on the case. Polanski’s lawyers argued that the judge who originally presided over the case had plans to jail him for no more than 90 days — a short sentence that would not force the director to be extradited to the United States.

Polanski fled California after being convicted of having unlawful sex with a minor 32 years ago. He has been held in Switzerland since September, when he was arrested on his way to a film festival.

Britney Spears in court for conservatorship case

Categories: Lawsuits, Music

Britney Spears went to court today for a closed hearing with her father, Jamie, as part of her ongoing conservatorship case, People.com reports. The courtroom was closed because the hearing involved medical information about the pop star, whose father has had control of the 28-year-old’s affairs since her mental breakdown nearly two years ago. The check-in with the judge was a routine part of the process in such cases. She will have to prove she’s able to manage her own affairs for her father’s control to be lifted.

Judge says Roman Polanski must return to U.S.

A Los Angeles judge says director Roman Polanski must return to the United States to be sentenced in his decades-old sex case, The AP reports. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza’s Friday ruling will likely be appealed by Polanski’s lawyers, who have argued that the director should be sentenced in absentia to time already served after he pleaded guilty in 1978 to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. Polanski is currently under house arrest at his Swiss vacation home.

New accounting firm RSM McGladrey will oversee the funds from now on, with all donations going to earthquake relief, the foundation announced; funds to cover overhead expenses will be raised separately. Jean is one of the co-hosts of tonight’s Hope for Haiti Now telethon.

Jackson estate administrators want share of profits

Categories: Music

The two men who control Michael Jackson’s estate — attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain — are asking a court to grant them 10 percent of the profits they generate from the pop star’s work, the AP reports. The fee will cover their administrative services and will exclude income from Jackson’s This Is It documentary and his interest in the Sony/ATV music catalog. His estate has been valued at $500 million, but he also had significant debts that must be repaid. Branca and McClain’s request noted that advisers to other high-profile estates have received up to 20 percent of profits.

Also, papers filed by the estate’s lawyers want to stop Jackson’s estate from paying a monthly allowance to the late singer’s father Joe Jackson.
