Phase 4 Films has struck a deal for US rights to the theatrical version of Brigitte Berman’s documentary Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel. The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival and Phase 4 plans to release it in theaters in late spring 2010. Hefner participated in the film, letting the filmmaker have access to his personal archives.

Edward Hogg cast in Roland Emmerich's Shakespeare story 'Anonymous'
Edward Hogg, who starred in last year’s Sundance title White Lightnin’, is playing one of the leads in Roland Emmerich’s next film Anonymous, producers announced today. The British actor will play Robert Cecil, the first Earl of Salisbury, who was a 16th-century minister serving Queen Elizabeth I. The film is about the true author of Shakespeare’s plays. Anonymous will shoot at Germany’s Studio Babelsberg starting in March. It marks the first shoot in Germany in 20 years for director Emmerich (2012).
Diego Luna expecting second child
Actor Diego Luna will soon welcome baby No. 2 with wife Camila Sodi. In a statement given to People through his manager, the actor said, “We want to confirm that Camila and I are expecting our second child…We’ve celebrated the news and it has brought great joy to our lives. Luna and Sodi have been married for nearly two years. Their first son, Jerónimo, is 17 months old.
Kiefer Sutherland victim of investment scam
According to People, Kiefer Sutherland has lost $896,000 in a financial scam headed by Michael Wayne Carr, a steer-roping promoter. The San Joaquin County, Calif., District Attorney’s office claims the actor was told by an adviser that Carr would net a large profit selling cattle bought from Mexico. No evidence points to any purchases. A couple in New Mexico and a man in Colorado were also victims of the scam.
Carr will be arraigned on 12 felony charges, including three counts of forgery, two counts of obtaining money by false pretenses, and five counts of theft with “great taking enhancements.” His arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 8. The District Attorney’s office is not sure whether or not Sutherland will be called to testify.
Anne Hathaway to announce Oscar nominees
Actress Anne Hathaway will be announcing this year’s Oscar nominees, the Academy has announced today. Hathaway, herself an Oscar nominee last year for Rachel Getting Married, will announce the nominees in 10 of the 24 categories on Feb. 2 alongside Academy president Tom Sherak. The Oscar ceremony will be held March 7.
'Avatar' star Sam Worthington in negotiations to play Dracula
Universal is in negotiations with Sam Worthington to star in its upcoming tentpole film, Dracula: Year Zero. News of the big-ticket, blood-sucker project was first reported by the movie site Latino Review, but the studio confirmed to Entertainment Weekly today that it is in talks with the Avatar star. Reps for Worthington have not responded to requests for comment. The project will reportedly be helmed by I, Robot director Alex Proyas for a summer 2011 release and will be a period picture tracing Dracula’s roots in Transylvania. Worthington’s next film is another big-ticket spin on a classic franchise, Clash of the Titans.
Another “roots of Dracula” project, Vlad, is in the works at Summit and Plan B.
Martha Stewart makes Hallmark Channel home
Martha Stewart has signed a deal to bring her syndicated talk show to Hallmark Channel beginning in September. She’ll also develop new series and primetime specials for the network, known most for its original movies. The hourlong Martha Stewart Show will air at 10 a.m. weekdays and kick off a 2 1/2-hour block of Stewart-developed programming.
Ashley Judd to publish memoir in 2011
Ballantine Books will publish a memoir by actress and activist Ashley Judd in the spring of 2011, the publisher announced in a statement. The book, Judd’s first, will draw from journal entries about her own painful childhood and her work as global ambassador for international public health non-profit PSI/Youth AIDS. “I hope that this book will be a call to action as well as a memoir,” Judd said.
