Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore ready to 'L.O.L.'
According to Variety, Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore are attached to star in a remake of the hit French comedy LOL (Laughing Out Loud), about the relationship between a teenager and her divorcée mother. Lisa Azuelos, the original film’s writer-director, is set to adapt her own script and direct.
Charlize Theron and David Fincher to produce HBO crime series
Charlize Theron and director David Fincher (Zodiac) are developing an HBO drama series based on the book Mind Hunters: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, according to Variety. Co-written by a former FBI agent, the book reveals profiling techniques used by investigators in pursuit of serial killers and rapists. Dexter exec producer Scott Buck is writing the pilot script.
Mel Gibson to star in 'Cold Warrior'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mel Gibson is in talks to reteam with Lethal Weapon scribe Shane Black on Cold Warrior, a thriller about a retired Cold War spy who works with a younger agent to neutralize a terrorist threat from Russia. Black, who helmed 2005′s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, will direct from a script by first-timer Charles Mondry.
Dreamworks to adapt 'Eat, Sleep, Poop'
Dreamworks has optioned the rights to the upcoming parental guide Eat, Sleep, Poop: A Common Sense Guide to Your Baby’s First Year (out March 30), according to The Hollywood Reporter. Producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (Men in Black, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) have enlisted Four Christmases scribes Mat Allen and Caleb Wilson to adapt the book, which is based on the real-life child-rearing experiences of a Beverly Hills pediatrician.
Zac Efron to star in CIA thriller 'Fire'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron is set to star in Fire, a big-screen adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis’ graphic novel about an ordinary college student drafted into a special CIA training program. Efron will also executive produce the project, which will be scripted by Marvel Comics vet Bendis.
Howard Zinn, author of 'A People’s History of the United States,' dies at 87
Howard Zinn, the political activist and professor who authored the popular left-wing text A People’s History of the United States, died of a heart attack Wednesday in Santa Monica, Calif., the AP reports. He was 87 years old. Zinn described his book, initially published in 1980, as an alternative to mainstream history texts; more than one million copies have been sold. Zinn had his share of admirers in the entertainment industry: A People’s History was an inspiration for Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska album and the 2007 documentary Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind; it was referenced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in the Good Will Hunting screenplay, and it appeared in the hands of a character on The Sopranos. Zinn, who lived in Auburndale, Mass., also penned the books The Southern Mystique, LaGuardia in Congress, and You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train. You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train was the title of a 2004 Damon-narrated documentary about Zinn. Zinn also narrated the Damon-produced documentary The People Speak, which was based on A People’s History and aired on the History Channel in December.
'Poltergeist' actress Zelda Rubinstein dies at 76
Zelda Rubinstein, the 4-foot-3-inch actress who declared “This house is clean!” in Poltergeist, died at age 76 at 1:59 a.m today, according to her agent Eric Stevens. Rubinstein was most famous for playing the oddball psychic Tangina Barrons, but she also appeared in movies including Sixteen Candles, National Lampoon’s Last Resort, and Southland Tales, and was an AIDS activist long before it was considered fashionable, appearing in a series of AIDS-awareness advertisements.
Author Louis Auchincloss dies
Patrician author Louis Auchincloss died Tuesday at age 92, reports the AP. The prolific writer of more than 50 books (such as The House of Five Talents, The Embezzler, and The Rector of Justin) also happened to be a cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and close friend of Gore Vidal’s, who paid tribute to the writer on Wednesday for his keen understanding of the American upper class. “Nobody else took those kinds of people, nobody understood them, except in the dumbest way,” Vidal said.
Michael Douglas' son pleads guilty to drug charges
Michael Douglas’ son, Cameron, 31, has pleaded guilty to dealing methamphetamine and cocaine out of a trendy New York hotel, according to the AP. He faces a minimum 10-year prison sentence.
