CBS greenlights 'True Love' pilot
CBS has given a greenlight to comedy pilot True Love from Matt Tarses. Variety reports that Tarses will write and executive produce the comedy about twentysomethings looking for love in New York.
New Line works with Farrellys, Owen Wilson for 'Hall Pass'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line has taken on the Farrelly Brothers comedy Hall Pass, which was in turnaround at Fox. Owen Wilson will star, with Jason Sudeikis also in talks to join the cast. The story is about a wife who gives her husband a free ticket for extramarital affairs to revive their marriage. Peter and Bobby Farrelly rewrote Pete Jones’ script and will also direct and produce. The production kicks off Feb. 23 in Atlanta. Also, The Farrellys’ Three Stooges film at MGM may be back on track with Bobby Farrelly telling The Boston Globe that Sean Penn will appear in the cast despite having said he was taking a break from showbiz.
ABC takes on pitches to star Carlos Mencia, Cedric the Entertainer
ABC has picked up two multicamera comedy pitches, Variety reports. Carlos Mencia will star in a family sitcom based on his life and stand-act. Separtely, Cedric the Entertainer will star as a retired baseball player/radio announcer whose life is rocked when his son and granddaughter re-enter his life.
Casey Johnson's family plans private funeral
The Johnson family has said that Casey Johnson’s funeral later this week will be private. A Johnson family spokesman told People: “The Johnson family wishes to thank everyone who has expressed condolences and support during this trying time. Your thoughts and prayers are deeply appreciated.” No funeral details were announced, although the family said her body will be “flown back east to her final resting place.” Johnson, the 30-year-old heiress and girlfriend to Tila Tequila, was found dead on Monday.
Seth Rogen, James McAvoy, and Anna Kendrick to headline cancer comedy
Hot off her Golden Globe-nominated performance in Up In The Air, actress Anna Kendrick has joined the cast an untitled new comedy to be directed by Jonathan Levine (The Wackness) and starring Seth Rogen and James McAvoy. The untitled film, which has McAvoy playing a twentysomething man who learns he has cancer, is set to begin filming next month. Kendrick will play a psychologist who counsels McAvoy’s character. Director Levine replaces Nicole Holofcener (Friends with Money), who left the project last fall reportedly due to differences over where to shoot the movie.
Michael Mann to direct HBO horse racing pilot
Public Enemies helmer Michael Mann is planning to direct the pilot for a new HBO TV series from writer David Milch (Deadwood), according to Variety. The hour long drama, entitled Luck, is set within the world of horse racing. Mann will likely begin filming in April.
Reports: 'Spider-Man 4' indefinitely delayed
Sony has decided to push back the start of production on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4, a Sony source confirms to Variety. (The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.) The film, starring Tobey Maguire and directed by Sam Raimi, was to have begun shooting in February. The studio does not yet know when the film will get rolling, according to the reports. Last month, Raimi and co. hit the pause button on pre-production in order to do further work on the script. It is now unliklely that Spidey 4 will meet its announced May 6, 2011 release date.
Sundance road-trip story gets digital release on Feb. 1
In an unusual distribution plan, Sundance Film Festival selection Bass Ackwards will be available nationwide on multiple platforms one day after the festival closes. New Video and Zipline Entertainment will release the film via digital retailers, cable VOD and DVD on demand on Feb. 1, followed by a larger DVD release in spring 2010. Actor Linas Phillips stars in and directs the story of a man travelling cross-country after ending an affair with a married woman. Mark Duplass (The Puffy Chair) is one of the film’s executive producers.
Vince Vaughn reportedly set to star in new Ron Howard film
Vince Vaughn (Couples Retreat) will star in an untitled dramedy directed by Ron Howard, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie, scripted by Alan Loeb (Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps) from an idea by Vaughn and producer Brian Grazer, will follow a man who discovers that his best friend’s wife is cheating. Shooting could begin as early as next spring.
