Channing Tatum to join Soderbergh spy thriller 'Knockout'

Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra) is in talks to join the cast of Steven Soderbergh’s spy movie Knockout. The film stars mixed martial artist and former American Gladiator “Crush,” Gina Carano, as a spy who is betrayed by one of her teammates. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tatum will play an agent in her spy cell and train with a Mossad agent to research the role.

Michael Angarano (Snow Angels, Jack’s son Elliot on Will & Grace) is also in negotiations to join the cast, which is rounded out by Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor and Dennis Quaid. He’ll play a teen who comes to Carano’s aide and becomes her pseudo partner.

Fox cop series 'Code 58' set to launch in summer

The new Fox series Code 58, an action-comedy cop series starring Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford, will premiere Monday, June 7 at 9 p.m., according to The Hollywood Reporter. Fox will also preview the L.A.-set show, from Burn Notice creator Matt Nix, after the May 12 and May 19 results show episodes of American Idol.

Ellen DeGeneres on Simon Cowell leaving 'American Idol': 'I'm trying not to take it personally'

Ellen DeGeneres broke the news to her talk show’s studio audience today that fellow American Idol judge Simon Cowell will leave the Fox ratings juggernaut at the end of this season to launch a U.S. version of The X Factor. Cowell’s announcement came on the first day of Idol‘s Hollywood Week, which also happens to be DeGeneres’ first official day as a judge. “I’m trying not to take it personally,” DeGeneres cracked. “Seriously, I’m going to be very, very sad to see him go, because I think he has made the show what it is,” the host continued to much audience applause. “But he wanted a change and I wish him all the luck in the world hosting The Tonight Show.”

EPIX strikes deal with Cox Communications

EPIX, the new HD entertainment service launched last year by Viacom, MGM, and Lionsgate, announced today that it has struck a deal with Cox Communications, America’s third-largest cable television company. The deal means that, from April, Cox will have access to 15,000 films, including such recent blockbusters as Star Trek, GI Joe, and Paranormal Activity.

Sarah Palin joins Fox News as a contributor

Fox News has announced that former Alaska governor Sarah Palin has signed a multi-year deal with the network to serve as a contributor, providing political commentary and analysis. Palin will also host multiple episodes of the inspirational series Real American Stories which will premiere in 2010. In a Fox statement Palin said, “I am thrilled to be joining the great talent and management team at FOX News. It’s wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news.”

Lifetime cancels 'Rita Rocks'

Lifetime has canceled its sitcom Rita Rocks, according to Variety. The series, which starred Mad TV’s Nicole Sullivan, ran for two seasons on the network.

Director Eric Rohmer has died

French director and critic Eric Rohmer, one of the founding minds behind the French New Wave, has died. Rohmer directed over 50 films, including the Academy Award-nominated My Night at Maud’s. Rohmer was 89 years old.

Jerry Seinfeld defends NBC late night

Jerry Seinfeld has waded into the discussion of NBC’s recent late-night schedule shuffles. The Hollywood Reporter quotes the comedian as calling Jay Leno’s 10 p.m. show “the right idea at the wrong time,” adding, “I’m proud that NBC had the guts to try something.”

Seinfeld also dismissed suggestions that Conan O’Brien’s Tonight Show has been mishandled by NBC. “What did the network do to him? I don’t think anyone’s preventing people from watching Conan. Once they give you the cameras, it’s on you. I can’t blame NBC for having to move things around.”

John Malkovich to star opposite Bruce Willis in 'Red'

John Malkovich has joined the cast of Red opposite Bruce Willis, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Willis and Malkovich will both play retired spies in the film, which is being adapted from a comics miniseries. Other cast members include Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, Richard Dreyfuss, Julian McMahon, and Ernest Borgnine.

Stuart Townsend leaves Marvel's 'Thor'

Stuart Townsend has given up his supporting role in upcoming Marvel film Thor, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Joshua Dallas will replace the Irish actor as Thor’s friend Fandral. Townsend is reportedly leaving due to creative differences.
