Teddy Pendergrass dies at 59

Categories: Music

Legendary R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass died Wednesday at the age of 59 in a Philadelphia-area hospital, his son told the AP. Pendergrass—who was paralyzed from the waist down in a 1982 car accident—had a “difficult recovery” from colon cancer surgery eight months ago, according to Teddy Pendergrass II. ”To all his fans who loved his music, thank you,” said his son. ”He will live on through his music.” The Philadelphia native rose to fame in the early 1970s as the lead singer of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, offering up such hits as “I Miss You” and “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” and earned even greater success as a solo artist in the late 1970s and beyond. He was the first black male singer to release five consecutive multi-platinum albums; his hits include ”Close the Door,” “Love T.K.O.,” ”I Don’t Love You Anymore,” and “Turn off the Light.” After spending six months in the hospital following his car accident, Pendergrass went on to record many more albums, starting with 1984’s Love Language, which contained “Hold Me,” a duet with Whitney Houston. The following year, Pendergrass made his return to the stage, performing in a wheelchair at Live Aid.  In 1998, he founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, an organization that helps people with spinal cord injuries.

NY court reinstates antitrust lawsuit against record labels

Categories: Lawsuits, Music, Music Biz

A New York federal court reinstated an antitrust lawsuit that accuses major record labels of fixing prices and terms for music to be sold over the Internet, Reuters reports. The plaintiffs said that they entered into joint ventures and licensing that, in effect, created artificial price floors for downloaded music and wholesale prices of 70 cents per song when competitor’s distributed their music. Circuit Judge Robert Katzmann, one of three judges on the panel, said, “Some form of agreement among defendants would have been needed to render the enterprises profitable.”

Wyclef Jean calls Haiti earthquake 'unprecedented'

Categories:

After yesterday’s 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Haitian-born musician Wyclef Jean released the following statement about the natural disaster, the worst the country has seen in 200 years:

“Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake–and several very strong aftershocks–struck only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince. I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now. President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands ‘ready to assist’ the Haitian people. The U.S. Military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible.”

An ardent supporter of his native land, Jean founded Yele Haiti in 2004, a grassroots organization that promotes change with educations, arts and sports. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who joined Jean in Yele’s first official anniversary celebration in Haiti in 2006, added in a statement: “We are devastated by the news from Haiti. We will work closely with our good friend Wyclef Jean to support the humanitarian efforts on the island and help those who have been injured and left without homes and shelter.”

To lend your support, text “Yele” to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill), or you can visit Yele.org and click on DONATE.
