Ratings: Jack Bauer defeats the Bachelor, but CBS still has the 'Big Bang'

Categories: TV Ratings

CBS topped the ratings Monday, led by the evening’s top two shows: Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. Fox came in second with night two of 24‘s four-hour season opener, which peaked at 9 p.m. with 11.5 million viewers. ABC finished third, with another emotional installment of The Bachelor, which built its audience over 120 minutes, maxing out at 11.4 million viewers in the last half hour. NBC finished fourth, with Heroes doing the kind of numbers that would only make it a hit on The CW. The CW, meanwhile, debuted the drama, Life Unexpected, to 2.7 million viewers. Its crowd grew over the course of the hour — a nice sign for any new series.

The Ricky Gervais-hosted affair, which aired from 8 to 11 p.m. on NBC Sunday, averaged 16.9 million viewers — a 14-percent bounce from last year and NBC’s best ratings in the young adults’ demographic since ER‘s finale last April.

Wyclef Jean denies personal benefit from Haiti charity

Categories:

Wyclef Jean denied allegations that he had personally profited from his earthquake-relief charity, Yéle Haiti, during an emotional press conference Monday, People.com reports. The Smoking Gun reported last week that the musician had used $410,000 in the foundation’s funds for rent, production services, and his own appearance at a benefit concert. “Did we make mistakes? Yes. Did I ever use any of Yéle’s money for personal benefits? Absolutely not,” Jean said Monday. “Yéle’s books are open and transparent, and we have been a clean bill of health by an external auditor every year since we started.” Yéle Haiti president Hugh Locke offered to make past tax forms public to prove the organization had not engaged in any wrongdoing. However, he acknowledged that the group had filed the last three years’ worth of tax forms late.

Report: Conan getting $40 million to walk from NBC

Categories: TV Biz

Conan O’Brien is nearing a deal to split with NBC’s Tonight Show for a $40 million payout, according to The Wall Street Journal. The deal would end the ugly dustup that has ensued since the network announced plans to move Jay Leno back into the 11:35 p.m. timeslot after his prime-time berth tanked in the ratings. O’Brien’s deal would reportedly bar him from (further) disparaging the network, but would allow him to land somewhere else in less than a year — instead of making him sit out the remaining two-plus years on his contract.

State of the Union address set for Jan. 27

Categories: Politics, Television, TV Biz

The White House has set Wednesday, January 27, as the date for President Obama’s latest State of the Union address, so it will officially not interfere with ABC’s final season premiere of Lost, as a nation previously feared. The broadcast networks should firm up plans for covering the event today; as the address will air live from 9-11 p.m. ET, Fox may plan the biggest move in switching ratings juggernaut American Idol to 8 p.m., according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Simon Cowell is recruiting judges for 'X Factor'

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Simon Cowell is in discussions with Paula Abdul and Cheryl Cole to become judges on his new show, X Factor, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cowell previously announced that this would be his last season on American Idol and that he would leave to focus on a stateside version of his hit U.K. show, X Factor, which will debut on Fox in fall 2011. The only question was: who would sit at the judges’ table with him? Abdul, who quit Idol in August during a contract dispute, would make perfect sense sitting next to Cowell again. After all, Cowell recently said he “adores” her. Cole is a less familiar choice to American audiences. The 26-year-old is already a fellow panelist with Cowell on the U.K. version of X Factor.
