Mo'Nique, Simon Baker among many newly announced SAG Awards presenters
Christina Applegate, Simon Baker, Benjamin Bratt, Morgan Freeman, Kate Hudson, Diane Kruger, Helen Mirren, Mo’Nique, Gabourey Sidibe, and Christoph Waltz will be presenters at the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, the show’s executive producer Jeff Margolis announced today. They join previously announced presenters Alec Baldwin, Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Brian Geraghty, Felicity Huffman, Anna Kendrick, Jane Lynch, Anthony Mackie, Michelle Monaghan, Carey Mulligan, Chris O’Donnell, Anna Paquin, Jeremy Renner, Ray Romano, Kyra Sedgwick, Meryl Streep, Justin Timberlake, Stanley Tucci, and Sigourney Weaver. The SAG Awards will air on TNT and TBS this Sunday.
'Howl' producers plan Linda Lovelace film
The producers of Howl, the Allen Ginsberg story which world premiered at Sundance last night, have a new biopic in the works. Their film Lovelace will examine the life of 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace, ScreenDaily.com reports. Lovelace, born Linda Boreman, rose to fame with Deep Throat and later became a feminist, anti-porn activist. W Merritt Johnson wrote the screenplay based in part on Eric Danville’s biography The Complete Linda Lovelace. The film, which goes into production later this year, will be told through the perspective of three interviewers meeting Boreman at different stages of her life.
Leona Lewis confirmed for Simon Cowell Haiti benefit single
Leona Lewis has signed on to participate in the all-star Haiti charity single that Simon Cowell is putting together, her rep confirms. Details of who else Cowell has enlisted, what they will sing, and when the single will arrive have yet to be released.
Isla Fisher, Andy Serkis, and Tom Wilkinson join 'Burke and Hare'
Isla Fisher, Andy Serkis, and Tom Wilkinson have all signed on to star alongside Simon Pegg in the John Landis-directed Burke and Hare, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The horror comedy marks Landis’ return to feature directing after an absence of more than 10 years. The film is based off of a notorious duo of serial killers from the U.K., William Burke and William Hare, who sold the corpses of their victims to a medial college for dissection. Serkis will play Hare opposite Pegg’s Burke; Fisher will portray Pegg’s girlfriend; and Wilkinson will play an anatomy lecturer on the hunt for freshly dead bodies.
Paul Quarrington, author of 'Whale Music,' dies at age 56
Canadian author Paul Quarrington, known for writing well-received rock ‘n’ roll novel Whale Music, which was loosely based on the life of reclusive Beach Boys bandmember Brian Wilson, died yesterday at his Toronto home from lung cancer, according to a post on his personal website. He was 56 years old. In addition to his skills in writing, Quarrington was also an accomplished guitiarist and screenwriter. His memoir, Cigar Box Banjo, is due out in May, and Quarrington spent the last years of his life working on his first solo CD and a third album with his band, Porkbelly Futures.
ABC greenlights two more drama pilots
ABC picked up two more drama pilots, True Blue and Matadors, potentially series during the 2010-11 TV season, on Thursday, according to Variety. True Blue is set in a San Francisco homicide unit, focusing on the detectives figuring out who killed one of their own. Matadors revolves around two families from Chicago—one big in the DA’s office, the other in charge of a big law firm—who are feuding. ABC had a busy week in the pilot-pickup department, giving the greenlight to eight total.
Jay Leno to headline White House Correspondents dinner
Much in-the-news late-night host Jay Leno, who will take back over The Tonight Show from Conan O’Brien on March 1, is set to headline the annual White House Correspondents dinner in May, according to CNN. The organization says that Leno was booked for the gig before NBC announced his return to The Tonight Show. The dinner is an annual tradition during which the President gets a chance to joke around with press. Leno has headlined the dinner before — in 2004, 2000, and 1987.
Martin Scorsese in talks to direct 'Invention of Hugo Cabret'
Martin Scorsese is in talks to direct The Invention of Hugo Cabret, a feature-film adaptation of the bestselling children’s novel by Brian Selznick, according to Variety. The film would be Scorsese’s first project based on a children’s book. John Logan (The Aviator, Gladiator) wrote the screenplay for the movie, which is expected to start shooting in May.
Michael Winterbottom to direct 'Promised Land' starring Jim Sturgess
Variety reports that British director Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart, 24 Hour Party People) will make his next feature film about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Promised Land will examine the lead up to the 1948 partition of Palestine and the creation of the state of Israel. Jim Sturgess (21) will star.
