Phase 4 Films has struck a deal for US rights to the theatrical version of Brigitte Berman’s documentary Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel. The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival and Phase 4 plans to release it in theaters in late spring 2010. Hefner participated in the film, letting the filmmaker have access to his personal archives.

What happened to that biopic with Robert Downey Jr. as Hefner?
I’d be curious to see it, but I bet it’s tame. So many of these documentaries that look into a sexual topic are about as graphic as a hallmark movie.
