Filed under: News and tagged: ,

James Mitchell, a former star of the ABC soap opera All My Children, died Friday in L.A. of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, complicated by pneumonia. He was 90. The actor — who had last appeared on the 40th anniversary of the show earlier this month — also boasted a notable career on the Broadway stage, where he starred in musicals such as Brigadoon, Carousel, and Paint Your Wagon. Mitchell also was a dancer, and appeared in films like The Turning Point, Oklahoma!, and The Band Wagon. Mitchell joined the cast of the soap opera in 1979 and played wealthy patriarch Palmer Cortlandt.

He will be truly missed. I’ve watched All My Children for years and always enjoyed the banter between Palmer and Adam. Rest in peace.

Mitchell’s storylines involving Palmer’s efforts to break up Cliff and Nina, and his love story with Daisy, were some of daytime’s all-time best. I will miss him.

I’ve complained about this before. You’re online. How hard would it be to post a picture? I kinda understand why you don’t always in the magazine(though it kills me when an old actor that was once very popular but has not been in anything for years passes away and you don’t publish a picture, but on the same page you may have a picture of some bimbo who’s getting a divorce. It’s called respect people.) But online, there’s no excuse for not posting a pic of the guy. Yet for any litle blurb or these idiots that the media keeps trying to shove down our throats as “celebrities” like the jersey morons or the kardashian tramps, oh, you can cough up a picture then.

Agree also. I was wondering where the picture was too.

Not only did I enjoy watching him dance in the movie Oklahoma ballet sequence as dream Curly, but enjoyed his performance as Palmer on All My Children. Truly a class act!

I enjoyed those performances, too. Ninety is a good age, a good long life with much success. He will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear this. I had the great fortune to interview him for my college paper years ago. His character was such a baddie, but he was a sweetheart to me and my sister. Thank you, James, for your fine work and sparkling personality.

Perhaps you could add the photo out of respect? It would be a nice touch. Plus lots of viewers may not remember him until they see the pic. Thanks.

I loved Palmer! He was probably one of AMC’s all-time best. What a talented actor. I’m so sad to hear that he’s gone.

    He will be missed. :-(

Very sad. I’m glad he got to do the 40th anniversary special before he died, he was his old rascally self. Long live Palmer.

I hope that AMC will provide a wonderful tribute show to him as they did when Eileen Herlie (Myrtle Fargate) and Ruth Warrick (Phoebe Tyler Wallingford) died. He deserves that much as he was such an important part of the show for so many years. AMC will not be the same without Pete Cooney/Palmer Cortland. RIP, James Mitchell – you were the best.
