Ratings: Viewers stay out of 'The Deep End'

The debut of ABC’s legal drama series The Deep End did not reach the young demographic it was aiming for by aligning itself with Grey’s Anatomy: The episode pulled in 7 million viewers and its 1.7 rating for Adults 18-49 was quite low. Bones and 30 Rock improved on their audiences from last week, and Fringe held steady on Fox in a 9 p.m. hour packed with new episodes.

I loved the deep end! its grey’s anatomy with more interesting job stories since law is always more interesting than medicine!
so great! pity people aren’t watching

    • Jay

I enjoyed it as well. I hope they don’t prematurely cancel it. It has potential.

medicine is more interesting than law. it’s a more difficult profession (there are millions more lawyers in the US than doctors b/c very few people can get into medical school). plus saving lives vs. a court case? no contest. (med student here!)

Lawyers save lives. And they salvage lives. Last episode they kept an insurance company from taking all of a woman’s money that she had gotten from the bus company that hit and paralyzed her. It was 500 thousand dollars that she needed for her family. That’s saving a life if I’ve ever seen it. I love the deep end. And its getting juicy with what Cliff just did to his wife. No spoilers!

I accidentely stumbled onto this while at a friends house. he doesnt have cable (ugh i know)- and i am nowhere near a grey’s anatomy fan, so i think thats why I was completely put off by this shows “humor”… wasnt interesting at all

  • Rob

I watched the deep end i thought it was boring during times but i like the concept of the show. I don’t think its going to last one season.

  • Luvie

I dvr’d The Deep End since I could finally watch The Vampire Diaries “live”. I’ll watch it this weekend to see if it holds my interest. But Survivor’s coming back in 2 weeks so it might still go by the wayside!

  • Adam

You mean yet another lawyer show, to add to all of the doctor shows, and CSI didn’t pull in ratings??? Here is an idea, a new concept.

  • js

the commercials were annoying and were repeated incessantly – totally turned me off. A comparison to Grey’s Anatomy is the nail in the coffin, blech.

  • schmed

Sure it was watchable(the cast is full of pretty people), but you don’t have to be a lawyer to see how absurd/unrealistic its “plots” were. First-year associates do not take cases to courts in their first few years, let alone first few weeks, and its failure to repreent conflicts of interest in anything approaching an accurate way (contrast “The Good Wife”) was laughable. But even on a pure narrative level it was ridiculous, e.g., the guy who can’t keep his business in his pocket was not a “cute” plot device, and why have the romance between the “Boy Scout” and the paralegal go from 0 to 60 in the very first episode. Blech!

    • John

That was my exact thought after I gave up on this show about a half hour in: if I want to watch a quality lawyer show, I’ll stick with “The Good Wife”, thank you very much.

      • D

It’s a shame The Good Wife is around to provide such a stark contrast to this nonsense, isn’t it? I love The Good Wife. However, this show is just so contrived and plot driven and irritating. I do love the girl that was also on Big Love, though. I’m glad she’s landed on a show of her own, but this is just not a great one.

Maybe they should’ve played up the fact that CLANCY BROWN is on the show in the ads. He is the man.

    • jmo

Shasta you had me at Clancy. I am a HUGE fan of the guy, so when I heard he was going to be in at least 4 episodes, I made sure to watch. But I found the show BORING. It’s a bad sign when the only compelling actors were Billy Zane and Clancy Brown? Sigh. I guess I’ll continue to get my CB fix from his gigs doing voice work.

      • Raisin

Put Clancy Brown in anything and I’ll watch! This show would be unbearable without him. Put him in more screen time and I’ll stick with it. Take him away and Im gone.

  • Keith

    I. Just. Can’t. Handle. Another. Show. about smug young lawyers getting paid too much money. There has GOT to be something more original these writers can come up with.

    • Sarah

      ITA.

  • S. Bob

    He’s great as Mr Krabs.

  • Jennifer

The ads for this show, yet another smug young lawyers doing things that new lawyers DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT get to do in the real legal system, totally turned me off, and putting it opposite ‘Bones’ meant there was no chance of my watching it. (Can you tell I work in the legal system? – I bet medical professionals have a hard time watching the many doctor shows on tv, too.)

  • MSR

I’m glad for Bones and Fringe – I hope they continue to grow. It’s sad that 30 Rock loses nearly 2 million viewers from its lead-in. NBC needs to finally switch its schedule – Community and The Office make a good combination, why not move 30 Rock to an earlier time and put Community or Parks in its place?

    • nat

I really hope more people start watching Fringe…its a great show! Now, if only EW would do a recap for it!

  • Sharlin

The commericals totally turned me off to see that show. If the only thing it had going for them was that “it comes from the network that brought you Grey’s Anatomy”… then I won’t see it. Grey’s has gone downhill anyway.

  • tiffany

serves them right for ridding of Eastwick :(:(:(

  • Danny

Two repeats of “The Big Bang Theory” beat NBC’s so-called comedies? Wow … the Peacock is losing more and more feathers by the day. Hopefully, the Olympics and 10:00 mea culpa with dramas in March will entice some viewers to return to network that has all but forsaken them. But back to Thursdays, I remember when NBC used to air programming that was actually FUNNY.
