I read the Red Cross has huge overhead a million dollar a year board members. No one speaks about that.
How can the man steal from himself if he put in $1 million to begin with. Hello?
I gave my donation to Alonzo Mourning’s charity. He & Dewayne Wade promised 100% of monies collected will go to Univ. of Miami-sponsored Project Medishare, which has been working in Haiti for 15 years. I have no way of auditing Alonzo’s charity but I trust him & D-Wade – - because I know of their good works over the years that they haven’t even sought publicity for. Alonzo went to Haiti more than once since the earthquake to help out – - even though he has health issues himself.
I was put off by Wyclef’s statements on Oprah. That whole “How dare they question me?” stance is just wrong. Every legit charity should welcome scrutiny & be happy to tout everything it does with others’ donations. They should not be afraid to admit mistakes or outline ways to fix mistakes they have made. Also didn’t like his claim that his people were being “treated like animals” because helicopters were dropping aid packages. I understand he is frustrated but look at the position of the aid workers – - if they don’t find the quickest ways to get food & water to the ground, people die. How many aid workers want to risk being mobbed by hungry, desperate people by landing on the ground, asking people to stand in line for orderly distribution of scarce goods – - without any security to maintain order? If I hadn’t eaten in days; I’d probably rush a helicopter bearing food, too!
Wyclef’s proposed solution to this was “let me take over the airport.” His rationale was “the people will listen to me”. He makes himself sounds like he’s the Messiah who can command huge numbers of hungry, desperate people stand in line for hours, days, weeks, whatever; while he personally doles out aid to them one-by-one. Is he delusional? If I hadn’t eaten in days, I wouldn’t care if my Mama & Pres. Obama were standing there telling me to wait my turn; I’d try to rush to get something to eat: that’s just the human survival instinct.
As we all know, there are plenty of people who are hateful or just plain indifferent to helping the people in Haiti right now. It’s not to smart to let your frustration at the slow pace of aid distribution cause you to say things that make potential donors not want to give. Haiti is going to need help for a long time. Wyclef’s attitude is so off-putting that I just don’t trust him- -period. When you hear his celebrity pals urging him to run for president of Haiti; you wonder if there’s another agenda going on. And if he did run & win the Presidency of Haiti; he’ll have to deal with us in the U.S. with real diplomacy – - a skill he has not exhibited thus far.
And I’m no great fan of how the Red Cross is run; but every time someone in my area here in the U.S. has a fire, a big flood, a tornado, etc; the Red Cross shows up to help them. I have witnessed this personally. So while I can criticize some of the practices of the Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc; I actually see them in action in my own neighborhood during times of calamity & they show up every time. I don’t know that about Wyclef’s charity; so the jury’s still out & a few anecdotes about him buying scooters & such are not enough to convince me of his intentions & ability to do what he claims to want to do in Haiti- – it’s as simple as that.
I have donated to American Red Cross only, all these other charities I don’t trust only donation to RED CROSS everyone and their mamas are having fundraisers, doubt the money even get to Haiti…
Come on folks, don’t tell me you believe everything you read or hear on the Internet and take it at face value? If so, I pity the fool! Why would a man start a foundation for his country and still his own money? Huh, huh, huh…cat got your tongue? Pretty stupid, and you believed it, not you…YOU! Do me a favor, read or watch a real news story, like CNN that vetta Yele Haiti and it is one of the top 10 non-profit organizations posted on the CNN website to donate, should you wish to give to the Haiti Earthquake cause. I myself chose to give $50 dollars which is all I could afford, but I gave something to a charity that returns 100% of its donations to the people of Haiti affected by the earthquake. BTW…that too was on CNN. Thank goodness for the Oprah Winfrey Show…where would so many people be without a show like Oprah that brings the truth to the light. Keep on keeping it real for your natives Wyclef – God Bless!
