In their first interview since Brittany Murphy’s death last month, the mother and husband of the late actress tell People magazine that they believe she died from a congenital heart murmur, not drugs as has been rumored.
“She had a little bit of a cold,” says Murphy’s mother, Sharon. “You could never in a billion years imagine this happening.” The 32-year-old actress’ mother and husband, Simon Monjack, add that Murphy did not suffer from mental illness, an eating disorder, or a drug habit. “Do you not think anybody would have picked up on this anorexic, mentally deranged person?” asks Monjack. “It’s ludicrous.” Both say that Murphy’s heart condition was diagnosed in her teens and had been monitored regularly. “We had it checked out every which way you could imagine,” says Monjack.
Murphy’s mother adds that her daughter’s “bubbly” may have sparked the rumors of her drug use. “She never even drank. Maybe a glass of champagne at New Years,” says Sharon. “But everyone used to say she was wasted, she was this, she was that. It was hard for anyone to imagine that somebody was so high on life.”
The issue of People with the entire story will be on sale Jan. 22.

no offense — cause I dug Brittany. But she appeared very underweight — so probably had an eating disorder. And if you take TOO MANY drugs — even Rx ones — you are risking your life. She didnt appear to take care of herself — none of that could have been good for her “murmur.”
Only those who knew her best will ever know for sure. In the end the child still lies dead, let her rest in peace. What’s it to the rest of us anyway? Leave the child and those who mourn her be.
I agree. I cannot believe people surround themselves and express their negativity during such a tragic time.
Of course she’s denying that her daughter abused drugs (and was anorexic). What’s the alternative? If she acknowledged that her daughter abused drugs she would have to acknowledge, “I brought up a daughter who abused drugs, which killed her, I’m a bad mother”. It’s called “cognitive dissonance”. Also, Murphy’s husband seems like a con artist.
Sorry about your loss, Mrs. Murphy, but you’re not fooling anyone. Your daughter was very, very thin. One doesn’t just pass away of natural causes at 32. And if she was a diabetic, there are numerous treatments out there so that they can live a long and healthy life. I know because diabetes runs in my family and family members that have it are still alive and taking very good care of themselves. Sounds to me like you’re in denial. And that husband of hers looks like a con man. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had something to do with it.
Actually, many many people are able to successfully hide an eating disorder for years, even from people they live with. I never thought she did drugs, but had a cousin with anorexia who almost died because of the damage the disease did to her heart, and that was my first thought when I heard about a 32 year old dying of heart failure. Doesn’t mean it’s true, but if you look at her as Ty in Clueless and then one of her more recent roles… it begs the question at least be considered.
Brittany was a wonderful actress, but obviously something was wrong with her. We the public should be a little more passionate for her mother and close friends to mourn their loss. If the family wants to tell the public the truth well thats their decision. RIP
Well Said! RIP <3
i have a heart murmur- the one brittany has. many things can affect it like stress levels, temperature, not getting enough sleep, lack of exercise or too much. i believe it may have been her heart murmur that was set off by something else (stress, etc).
