More stars respond to crisis in Haiti

Tags:

Stars ranging from Oprah and Adam Lambert to Ben Stiller, Crash director Paul Haggis, House‘s Olivia Wilde, LL Cool J, and Usher continue to use their celebrity as a platform to urge fans and Twitter subscribers to donate in the name of Haitian disaster relief.

Many are simply retweeting the information for Haitian-born former Fugee and solo artist Wyclef Jean‘s Yele Foundation (texting “Yele” to 501501 from your cell phone will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund; the charge will appear on your phone bill).

The Office‘s Rainn Wilson, who visited Haiti via the nonprofit Planting for Peace in October, is asking fans who subscribe to his Twitter to text the word “HAITI” to 9099 for an automatic $10 donation; actress Wilde, who also visited Haiti on a relief mission last month, is repeatedly encouraging her followers to give to Artists for Peace and Justice.

Oprah began her show yesterday by asking viewers to donate to the Red Cross relief fund; Usher is soliciting funds via his own New Look charity. Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Nicole Ritchie and others have all tweeted direct links to UNICEF.

Director Haggis, who formed the organization Artists for Peace and Justice in 2009, has garnered the support of a host of Hollywood types — Charlize Theron, James Franco,  Maria Bellow, Josh Brolin, Diane Lane and Oliver Stone among them — and is currently soliciting donations on its website as well. Watch a video featuring several of them visiting Haiti here.

Also, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — the group behind Sunday’s Golden Globes — has donated $100,000 to Yele.

I like that they’re soliciting donations, but would appreciate it more if they would make donations themselves.

You don’t know that they aren’t. I don’t think they would ask their fans to donate if they, themselves, haven’t.

Brad and Angelina just donated $1 million..

  • Plead the 5th

Most of them already have, they’re just not being attention whores about it.

  • Bleedish

We don’t know what they are donating. And no matter your income, whatever you choose to do with your money is up to you.

    • BP

      Sigh.

    Alyssa Milano just donated $50,000

    • John

      Adam West just donated $100.00

If all my friends donated an entire year’s salary, it would all equal up to an amount Oprah could donate without ever even feeling it. I did donate money to Doctors w/o Borders for Haiti, but having these millionaires hit *us* up bugs me. Give yourselves. Anonymously.

You sound like a young and immature individual. If you were truly compassionate, would it matter who gave what as long as the need was met. If it were you, how would you feel? Don’t hate on their millions, make your own!

If Oprah would donate half her weekly grocery shopping budget, Haitians would be eating quite well for the next month

I wonder if Kanye is gonna say that President Obama doesnt like black people…

    • nicole

That’s funny. But why would Kanye say that?
If you recall, President Bush was not exactly rushing to the aid of the hurricane victims who were mostly Black. His statement was a reaction to that.

      Your comment is pointless.

    Mistake in story text:
To donate to the Red Cross, you text “Haiti” to 90999, not to 9099.

Sweetie be serious! Do you HONESTLY think they are soliciting donations, and have not donated something themselves. BE SERIOUS. What have YOU done?

    • John

      Corry Feldmen just donated $50.00

  • T.

Bill Gates can buy America! What couldn’t he do for Haiti? We need to hit him up!!!

  • jannice meihls

    donate $10.00

Let’s forget about the politics and give to this tragedy within the human family. Pray without ceasing!

  • mateojdesigns

I’m hopeful that the continued relief for Haiti keep coming in and every citizen will at least donate even 1.00 to the cause. I challenge everyone this week that rather than buying a bag of chips that you stop and ask your self what could this dollar to do someone in need?
