Taylor Lautner signs on for 'Northern Lights'; Tom Cruise not attached

Taylor Lautner is set to star in the action movie Northern Lights, which, contrary to reports stating otherwise, will not feature Tom Cruise. A rep for David Ellison’s Skydance Productions tells EW the official logline is as follows: “Set against the backdrop of extreme flying, Northern Lights follows four young pilots as they compete against the world’s best. A story of teamwork, sacrifice, loss, and victory, these young aviators push themselves to physical and emotional limits in the unforgiving world of performance aerobatics.” The other pilots have not been cast.

The film, directed by John Moore (Max Payne) and produced by Ellison’s Skydance and Dean Devlin for Paramount, will start production in Louisiana in April, date TBD. Skydance — which has a deal with Paramount — says that Cruise is not attached to the project in any way. There is no “billionaire father” character as one synopsis suggested. As for the claim that Lautner will receive a $7.5 million paycheck for the film, the Skydance rep had no comment.

David Ellison, a former pilot who was one of the stars of Flyboys, is the son of Oracle’s Larry Ellison.

Well, I guess this will be the movie to prove if Taylor has genuine potential as an actor or if he’s just the pretty boy who has to take his shirt off in order to be relevant.

Everyone with a problem(jealousy)with Taylor has to bring up always the same old song about the shirltess thing. What part of jumping out of planes aerobatics entails being shirtless!!? Move on. always perplexed why ppl bother commenting if they are not fans. Do you seroiusly have that much time to seek out ppl you dont like to bash.

Who said I had a problem with Taylor or was even jealous of him? I have nothing against him, what I pointed out is a reality. Twilight isn’t a film for someone to flex their acting chops, and being part of that franchise puts any actor who wasn’t widely known before Twilight at risk of being typecast, especially in Taylor’s case. Not only is he shirtless onscreen, he’s also shirtless in every magazine that features him. He’s mainly known as being a sex symbol among teen girls (and some older ladies as well). I do have a beef with Twilight, but not with the actors in it. If anything, I actually feel sorry for them. They will all have a huge hurdle trying to get past that image once the movies are over.

Wow…if studios really think this guy is worth 7.5 million, they are in for a rude awakening. He may be one of the leads in Twilight, but nothing has proven whether his name alone can draw in the crowds.

    • Virginia

I disagree – this sounds VERY boring, been there done that with “Top Gun”. Didn’t anyone learn anything from the recent bomb of “Fame”?

  • nerder

thank god i thought Tom lost it…

Who the hell is he? How can someone pay this kid 7.5 million? Who the hell is he? Productions companies are just giving a piece of that cash these days. The movies boring.

I’m sorry, but this sounds extremely LAME.

Taylor Lautner is the new Steven Seagal.

  • HAHA

i think the move looks great its a deep movie not a candy floss movie and if taylor can fully prove to us he can act then he is here to sta for a long long time

  • kelkel26

I think I will always see Sharkboy when I look at him.

  • jeff turner

He was hilarious and very self-assured on Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago. If he has a half-way decent agent, he could certainly make a decent career for himself. He appears to be quite talented.

  • emily

give him a chance i think he’s a pretty good actor and how do u think others actors made it big. But he will draw a crowd because of his hotness

  • Jamie

At least he actually has talent. I can’t say the same about those hacks from the Harry Potter series.

    • Leena

Which is why one of those “hacks” is getting rave reviews performing in theatre?

    • Igby

      you seem pretty smart

  • anonymus

Honestly, without Cruise, the whole film just became much more appealing.

    • Taylor

I couldn’t agree more, I saw tom cruise, and I was like ew, he is crazy, and an over the top actor, its painful to watch a movie with him in it. Now that he’s not in this movie, looks much better.

  • FB4

Honestly, the guy can probably open a movie so he’s worth the money to studios. After that it’s up to the film to actually be good and Lautner to be good in it. Cruise has always been more of a personality than an actor and that personality is now irritiating. I’d rather not see him in films.

  • amitiel

I gotta wonder about Lautner’s judgement. He seems to be signing on to these cornball action projects left and right, each of which scream “FAIL!” The director of Max Payne? Really? You wanna work with that guy? And a movie based on a toyline with no director and no script at the time he signed on. WTF?

    • yvete

If he is going to be the highest paid teen in Hollywood, I’m guessing his judgment is better than you think.

I would rather wait to see the final product than start trashing this kid ahead of time.
