Kathryn Bigelow wins, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie attend DGA Awards

The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow won the Directors Guild of America award for feature film direction last night in Los Angeles, the first woman ever to receive the accolade. After taking the stage to a rousing ovation, a clearly overwhelmed Bigelow finished her short acceptance speech by saying, “This is the most incredible moment of my life.”

Much of the room took note that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie sat together at nominee Quentin Tarantino’s table all evening (so much for all those news reports about the über-couple’s imminent break-up). As per DGA tradition, all the feature nominees got a chance to speak, and Pitt used his time introducing his Inglourious Basterds director to talk about his many Tarantino-isms, like calling the perfect film take the “big sister” everyone wants to date, and the slightly imperfect take the “little sister” which, Pitt noted, is “not as pretty, but you’d still take her home — and she may prove more interesting.” Tarantino thanked Pitt for his introduction, meanwhile, by stating that “both my testicles were tingling during the whole thing.”

Indeed, it was a warm and lighthearted evening; all the nominated directors spent generous amounts of time singing the praises of their fellow nominees. Avatar director James Cameron also thanked his cast for embracing the mega-blockbuster film’s “experimental” process, explaining they were “friends for life in a way that’s never happened to me on a film before.” Jason Reitman playfully pointed out that his father, director Ivan Reitman (who also serves as a producer on his son’s film Up in the Air), had never received a DGA Award nomination, and then the younger Reitman earnestly dedicated his nomination plaque to his dad. And director Lee Daniels (Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire) had easily the best line of the night: Thanks to a luggage mishap, Daniels had to make due with a tux that was too small, so, he explained to waves of laughter, “I’m wearking a spank [sic], and I’m taking this f—er off as soon as I get off this stage.”

Other honorees included the director of feature documentary The Cove (Louie Psihoyos) and the HBO TV-movie Taking Chance (Ross Katz), as well as directors of episodes of Mad Men (Lesli Linka Glatter) and Modern Family (Jason Winer). Respective Walt Disney and Warner Bros. studio heads Robert Iger and Barry Meyer won honorary lifetime membership awards. And director Norman Jewison (In the Heat of the Night, Moonstruck) tearfully accepted the DGA’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Rip Torn arrested for alleged bank break-in

Categories:

Actor Rip Torn, 79, was arrested Friday night on charges of burglary and criminal trespassing after officials allegedly found him carrying a loaded revolver inside a bank in Salisbury, Conn., according to the Register Citizen newspaper. A police report published on TMZ.com states that Torn used “forced entry” to get inside the bank and was “highly intoxicated” when taken into custody. The actor is being held on a $100,000 cash bond and is set to appear in court on Feb. 1. A rep for Torn did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In 2007, Torn paid a fine after pleading guilty to a DUI charge in North Salem, N.Y.; he was acquitted of a similar charge in 2004 when a Manhattan jury ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the actor was intoxicated when he got into a minor car collision with a taxi.

GLAAD: CBS' Super Bowl ad rejection seems like a 'homophobic double standard'

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has released a statement asking CBS to publicly explain its advertising standards after rejecting a proposed Super Bowl commercial from gay dating website Mancrunch.com. The statement points out that the rejection follows the network having recently approved a controversial Super Bowl spot from the Christian organization Focus on Family. “This network should come clean to the public about what’s going on because this seems to be a homophobic double standard,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.

CBS is not offering further comment in response to GLAAD’s statement. Yesterday, the network explained its decision on the Mancrunch ad with the following statement: “After reviewing the ad — which is entirely commercial in nature — our Standards and Practices department decided not to accept this particular spot. As always, we are open to working with the client on alternative submissions.”

In its rejection letter to Mancrunch, CBS also cited trouble with verifying the company’s credit status — a 30-second spot costs an estimated $2.6 million. A rep for Mancrunch claims the company has the money and even offered to pay cash upfront for the commercial. CBS tells EW the network has no record of such an offer.

'Top Chef' finalist Kevin pulls out of Bocuse d'Or competition

Categories: Television

Top Chef season six finalist Kevin Gillespie has pulled out of the Bocuse d’Or — the international culinary competition in which he was entered after winning a Top Chef challenge last season. According to his rep, Melissa Libby, Gillespie felt he didn’t have adequate time to prepare. “He just realized with everything he had going on business wise and busy-ness wise, he couldn’t devote the time and energy he needed to really represent the United States well and he just didn’t want to let anyone down,” Libby told EW. “He’s very, very serious and a perfectionist.” Gillespie wrote a letter to the Bocuse D’or committee, asking to be removed from the list of semi-finalists, and when the committee granted him permission, they also offered him a deferral for the next Bocuse d’Or, which takes place in 2013. While Gillespie still runs his Woodfire Grill restaurant in Atlanta, the rest of his time is spent on obligations to Bravo. Though Libby wouldn’t specify, she said his work with the show since wrapping has been more behind-the-scenes. To her knowledge, the network was never consulted regarding Gillespie’s decision to withdraw. “Certainly some of his obligations with Bravo were some of the things making him so busy, but they certainly didn’t do anything to make him pull out nor did they try to make him stay in,” Libby said. Bravo declined to comment.
