Simon Cowell's brother: 'Simon will leave Idol at the end of 2010'

Simon Cowell’s brother Tony made a bold statement during his weekly podcast, saying that his famed judge sibling will be leaving the U.S.’s biggest television show, American Idol, at the end of 2010. “Meanwhile, Simon prepares for a new season of Idol—or should I say, his last season of Idol,” Tony said during a segment. He continued: “OK, I will. Because it is. As I sit here with my family in the sunny Caribbean, a press statement is being prepared, which will confirm what everyone expected: Simon will leave Idol at the end of 2010 to concentrate on bringing the American version of X Factor to U.S. TV in 2011.”

Rumors about Simon Cowell leaving Idol circulate rather regularly. A press representative for American Idol at Fox and Simon Cowell’s personal publicist had no comment on the statements from Tony Cowell.

'CSI' creator plans female cop drama

CBS has ordered scripts for Jax and Amber, an action drama that centers on two female detectives with a unique insight into crimesolving, according to Variety. CSI creator Anthony Zuiker and Deran Sarafian (House) are on board as executive producers; Sarafian would direct if the project goes to pilot.

Fox goes yellow to honor 'Simpsons' 20th anniversary

Beginning Jan. 3, graphical elements across Fox properties will turn yellow for one week to celebrate The Simpsons‘ 20th anniversary, according to the Hollywood Reporter. On-air graphics, Fox’s online presence, social networking pages and on-air promos will all be yellow, and local Fox news anchors will wear yellow ties. On Jan. 10, Fox will air the 450th Simpsons episode and an hour-long documentary special about the series directed by Morgan Spurlock.

ABC orders pilot for 'Women Are Crazy, Men Are Stupid'

ABC has greenlit a pilot for the multicamera comedy, Women Are Crazy, Men Are Stupid, potentially for the 2010-11 TV season, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The sitcom is based on the book of the same name by Howard Morris and Jenny Lee, who also wrote the pilot script, and concerns a couple who both come from divorce but are focused on getting it right this time around.

Kim Peek, inspiration behind 'Rain Man,' dies at 58

Kim Peek, the savant with a memory who inspired the title character in the Oscar-winning movie Rain Man, died at age 58, according to his father, who spoke to the Associated Press. Peek died of a heart attack on Saturday and was pronounced dead at a hospital in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray.

LeAnn Rimes agrees to confidential divorce settlement: report

Country singer LeAnn Rimes, 27, and husband Deane Sheremet, 29, agreed to a confidential divorce settlement last week, on the same day that Sheremet filed papers, according to People. “The [settlement] shall not be filed in this proceeding due to the parties mutual desire to maintain their respective rights to privacy,” the document reads. After eight years of marriage, Rimes and Sheremet will officially be single on June 19, 2010.

Martin Sheen returns to the stage in 'Roses'

Martin Sheen will return to Broadway in The Subject Was Roses, Variety reports. Sheen received a Tony nomination 46 years ago when he played the son; this time he will play the father. The play will open the season of Los Angeles’ Mark Taper Forum in February, replacing David Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow. Frances Conroy and Brian Geraghty will co-star.

'Hurt Locker,' 'Nine' win Satellite Awards

The International Press Academy handed out its 14th annual Satellite Awards, with The Hurt Locker named best drama and Nine named best musical. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeremy Renner won dramatic actor for The Hurt Locker, with Shohreh Aghdashloo winning for The Stoning of Soraya M. In the comedy/musical category, Meryl Streep won for Julie & Julia and Michael Stuhlbarg for A Serious Man. Kathryn Bigelow was named best director for Hurt Locker. In the TV categories, winners included Breaking Bad, Glee, Little Dorrit, and Grey Gardens.

Sundance 2010 festival adds films starring Katie Holmes, Julianne Moore

The 2010 Sundance Film Festival added three films to its slate of world premieres playing out of competition today. The Romantics, described in a festival release as a “zeitgeist love story and a generational comedy,” was adapted by director Galt Niederhoffer from her novel of the same name, takes place at a seaside wedding, and stars Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, Anna Paquin, Adam Brody, Malin Ackerman, Elijah Wood, and Candice Bergen. Festival darling director Lisa Cholodenko (High Art, Laurel Canyon) will debut her latest film The Kids Are Alright, which stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska (the upcoming Alice in Wonderland), Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Center of the Earth), and Annette Bening, and follows two artificially conceived children who decide to bring their biological father into their lives. And Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha will premiere It’s a Wonderful Afterlife, “a comedy centered on an Indian mother who discovers that finding the perfect son-in-law can be murder.” The festival runs Jan. 21- 31.
