'Pied Piper'-inspired comic to be made into film

Persistent Entertainment is planning on turning comic The Piper into a film, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The movie will concern a bullied high school band student who channels the spirit of the Pied Piper.

Philip Seymour Hoffman to star in new Paul Thomas Anderson film

According to Variety, writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood) has attached Philip Seymour Hoffman to star in his next film, a period piece about organized religion. Anderson is still working on the script of the drama, which centers around “The Master” (to be played by Hoffman), the founder of a faith-based organization in the early 1950s. Anderson and Hoffman have previously collaborated on Boogie Nights, Hard Eight, Punch-Drunk Love, and Magnolia.

Beyonce, Taylor Swift lead the Grammy nominations

Nominations for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards were announced Wednesday night on a live CBS television special. Beyoncé won the most nominations with ten. Taylor Swift landed 8 nods, and the Black Eyed Peas, Maxwell, and Kanye West each had six. The actual awards will be broadcast live on CBS on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. 'Sons of Anarchy' renewed for a third season

Sons of Anarchy has been picked up for a third season by FX, reports Variety. The show’s season finale Tuesday night earned 4.3 million viewers, the biker drama’s highest audience ever. The 13-episode new season is due to launch in September, with all series regulars returning.

Nancy Grace to launch syndicated court show in fall 2010

Famed HLN talk show host Nancy Grace will launch a syndicated courtroom-style show in fall 2010, reports TVNewsCheck and Variety. Swift Justice with Nancy Grace has already been sold in 80 percent of the country, the first big development in syndicated TV since Oprah Winfrey announced she would leave her talk show in 2011. Grace will also still host her HLN show Nancy Grace.

Adam Lambert's 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' performance canceled

Adam Lambert’s Dec. 17 outdoor concert on Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been canceled, an ABC spokesperson confirmed to EW. “We decided not to move forward with the booking at this time,” said the spokesperson, who wouldn’t comment on whether the cancellation had anything to do with the singer’s controversial performance at the American Music Awards last month on ABC. Lambert’s appearance on Kimmel was booked before the AMAs had aired.

Lambert’s rep told EW that the singer will now perform on The Jay Leno Show on Dec. 21 instead, but a rep for the NBC show was unable to confirm his appearance at press time.

Obama's Afghanistan speech pulls in 40.8 million viewers

President Barack Obama’s prime-time speech about his impending strategy for the war in Afghanistan drew more total viewers Tuesday night than recent high profile speeches about health care, according to Nielsen Media Research. All told, 40.8 million people on ten TV networks watched the president’s speech, up 27 percent from his health care address in September, and 65 percent from his health care press conference last July. The president’s biggest ratings, however, remain his February speech to a joint session of Congress about health care reform, which pulled in 52.4 million viewers.

Gwyneth Paltrow to play country singer in 'Love Don't Let Me Down'

Gwyneth Paltrow will star as a singer in the country-music drama Love Don’t Let Me Down, according to Variety. Paltrow will play a fallen country singer who becomes involved with an up-and-coming young musician played by Garrett Hedlund (Four Brothers). Also starring are singer Tim McGraw as Paltrow’s manager and husband, and Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) as a former beauty queen. The film, which is being directed and written by Shana Feste and produced by Tobey Maguire, will start shooting January in Nashville.

'Friends' finale the most-watched show of the decade

The series finale of Friends, which aired in May 2004 and attracted 52.5 million viewers, was the most-watched TV series episode of the decade, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Following Friends were the first season finale of Survivor, the season one finale of Joe Millionaire, an ER episode from 2000, and the premiere episode for American Idol‘s sixth season. Seven of the top 10 episodes are from the first half of the decade, as an increase in channels has fractured audiences and made “must-watch shows” harder to connect with huge audiences. Sundance 2010 competition includes films by Josh Radnor, Mark Ruffalo

The Sundance Institute has today unveiled the lineup of films in competition for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival (Jan. 21-31). The U.S. Dramatic Competition’s 16 films include: Derek Cianfrance’s romantic drama Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams; HIMYM star Josh Radnor directing and starring in happythankyoumoreplease; Kevin Tyler Asch’s Holy Rollers starring Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Bartha; James Franco starring in Allen Ginsberg story Howl; Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut feature Sympathy for Delicious; and Jake Scott (Ridley’s son) directing James Gandolfini and Kristen Stewart in Welcome to the Rileys.

The U.S. documentary competition includes a Joan Rivers documentary; Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) examining public education in Waiting for Superman; Afghanistan soldier project Restrepo, which is co-directed by author Sebastian Junger; Spellbound director Jeffrey Blitz’s Lucky about lottery winners; and Tamra Davis’ film about Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The World Cinema Narrative Competition features 14 selections including Animal Kingdom starring Guy Pearce; British jihadi comedy Four Lions; Iraq-set family drama Son of Babylon; and Indian satire Peepli Live. World Cinema Documentaries include Jose Padilha’s Secrets of the Tribe, about indigenous people in the Amazon Basin; Sins of My Father, about Pablo Escobar’s family; and Lucy Walker’s Waste Land, which follows an artist who collaborates with garbage pickers in Rio.
