Spielberg and Kidman to present Golden Globes

Steven Spielberg, Nicole Kidman and Sam Worthington will present Golden Globes at the Jan. 17 awards ceremony in Beverly Hills. The Associated Press reports that the trio will join previously announced presenters, including Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

Weinstein Co. slashes 'Nine' theater count

Nine, The Weinstein Company’s musical that received five Golden Globe nominations, is shrinking rather than expanding its theater count. After the star-studded film finishing eighth at the box-office last weekend, its second week of release, the Weinstein Company told Reuters that director Rob Marshall’s movie will go from 1,400 screens to about 890 screens.

'Hangover' star Justin Bartha may head to Broadway

Justin Bartha is poised to make his Broadway debut in Lend Me a TenorVariety reports. Bartha is reportedly taking on the role originally starring T.R. Knight., as Max, the assistant to the general manager of the Cleveland Opera who unexpectedly has to take the stage. Stanley Tucci directs the revival of the screwball comedy. Previews open March 11. The cast also includes Anthony LaPaglia and Tony Shalhoub.

Judge denies Bristol Palin's request to keep custody trial private

An Alaska judge has denied Bristol Palin’s request to keep her custody court battle private, CNN reports. Palin, the daughter of former VP candidate Sarah Palin, had asked the court that her court dealings with ex-boyfriend Levi Johnston over the custody of their son be kept private to prevent “a media circus.” Bristol Palin is seeking full custody of one-year-old Tripp. Johnston is seeking shared custody. Both parents are 19 years old.

'Jeff Dunham Show' won't see second season on Comedy Central

Despite scoring the most-watched series premiere for Comedy Central, The Jeff Dunham Show won’t be coming back for a second season. His series debuted in October with 5.3 million viewers, dropping to as low as 1.3 million in December. A Comedy Central spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter: “We have no plans to renew the series at this time.” Still, the ventriloquist will be back on the network with another special in fall 2010.

Helio Castroneves welcomes baby girl

Dancing with the Stars champion Helio Castroneves is a new dad. The Indy car driver’s girlfriend Adriana Henao gave birth to daughter Mikaella at 4:15 p.m. Monday in Atlanta, People reports. The baby weighed 7 lbs., 3 oz.

Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy Sullivan dies

Rising heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold’s drummer, Jimmy Sullivan, died Monday at his Southern California home, Reuters reports. James Owen Sullivan — whose nickname was “The Rev” — died of natural causes at age 28. “Jimmy was not only one of the world’s best drummers,” the band said on its website, “but more importantly he was our best friend and brother.” The band, which Sullivan co-founded in 1999, hit No. 4 on the U.S. pop album chart in 2007 with its latest, self-titled album. Sullivan was known for penning the song “A Little Piece of Heaven,” a joking ode to necrophilia, and for a 2006 Revolver magazine story detailing his dabbling in cocaine and other drugs.

'Jersey Shore' town distances itself from show

Seaside Heights, N.J. — the home of MTV’s controversial new reality hit Jersey Shore — is all but disowning the show that has made it infamous, the AP reports. In a statement Monday, the borough said it “did not solicit, promote, or participate in the filming” of the series about 20-somethings in a beach house; it merely issued routine permits allowing crews to shoot in its jurisdiction. Jersey Shore has been criticized by Italian-American groups for its stereotypical portrayals, and town officials say it does not reflect the majority of its visitors.

Van Morrison (NOT) a father at 64

UPDATE: On Dec. 31, representatives issued a statement on behalf of Van Morrison saying that this widely reported story was in fact a hoax, ”completely and utterly without foundation.” The misinformation was blamed on a hacker attack on the singer’s website.

Singer Van Morrison has become a father again at age 64, BBC News reports. In a statement on his website, the Irish-born crooner announced the Monday birth of George Ivan Morrison the III to Morrison and his manager, Gigi Lee. The “Brown-Eyed Girl” singer also has a 39-year-old daughter, singer-songwriter Shana Morrison, from his first marriage to Janet Minto.

'Ragtime' revival to end run on Broadway: report

The Kennedy Center’s revival of Ragtime will end its run on Broadway Sunday, according to the Washington Post. The $8.5 million production, a streamlined version of the 1998 original, failed to light up the box office during the winter months. By the time it closes this weekend at the Neil Simon Theatre, it will have run for about 60 performances.
