This movie got as far as it did based on the Weinstein hype machine (see also Paltrow’s Oscar for Shakespeare in Love). All hype, polish and Oscar-grabbing and very little substance. I thought Chicago was extremely overrated, but even it was better than this.
Thank you! Chicago was definitely overrated. Nine was hyped as being “from the creators of Chicago”, which was not a selling point to me
I think in a few years’ time, if not sooner, Chicago will be seen as a classic “What Were They Thinking?” punchline. I enjoyed it, don’t get me wrong. But Best Picture? Best Supporting Actress (Zeta-Jones was far more deserving for Traffic). Not by a long shot.
LOL, I’m glad it’s finally ok to say what a crappy movie Chicago is. I notice it’s absent on most critics Top 10 movies of the decade.
My Mom and I saw this on Saturday. We really liked it. It turns out Fergie is a talented singer (hard to tell with the all the voice synthesizers on her black eyed peas stuff). The movie got off to a slow start – when it was focused on Guido and not the women – but I think I’ll be getting this on DVD.
Nine was only the third movie in my life I walked out on halfway through. I couldn’t take it, what a let down.
There are several problems with Nine. The songs are mostly one-offs which tell (rather than show) the position each woman holds in Guido’s life. More importantly, the film spends 2 hours showing an angst-filled filmmaker unable to commit any idea to film. It’s like watching two hours of a writer having writer’s block…not all that fascinating. The parts don’t add up to — well a Nine. I liked Fergie, Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench. Therefore I give it a Three.
Better than my personal review; I gave it a two LOL.
I love movie musicals, but I would have a really hard time paying to see something featuring Kate Hudson. Maybe if the reviews were very strong.
Its still near me thank god, magnificent film, I cant wait to see it several more times!
it wasn’t as bad as the reviews make it seem. i’d give it a B-. DDL was brilliant as usual, but the songs (except for Be Italian) were so mediocre. I loved Chicago b/c the songs were excellent and had great lyrics, melody and idk “oomph”. Nine’s songs were so….flat.
I truly believe America is fed up with the whore Kate Hudson. Almost Unfamous.
I saw NINE. Too overblown for me. But I hated CHICAGO too.
The ONLY reason this was nominated for Golden Globes is because they have a seperate musical/comedy category. AND the GG’s is an international organization…not American. They love to vote for foreign actors…and those actors usually win.
They are cutting back the numbers of theaters becuse the movie has TANKED. Also THE ROAD (and THE LOVELY BONES) aren;t being released “wide” till mid-January. They only opened in a few theaters so they could be considered for Oscars. These 3 movies…. NINE,The Road, The Lovely Bones
have gotten LOUSY reviews. Critics HATED them.
I was so disappointed with this. Visually speaking, it was phenominal and stunning; everyone looked gorgous and the lightining and cinematography was amazing. My problem was with the dialogue, everyone trying to act it out, and DDL’s accent. I wanted to applaud Fergie after “Be Italian” and am embarrassed hwo much I enjoyed KHud’s “Cinema Italiano”.
How did they manage all these Golden Globe nominations and “The Road” shut out. How does Viggo M. miss? He was awesome in The Road.
Harvey prefers musicals over apocalyptic thrillers dahlings! All g@y people do!! Tee-hee!
