Nine, The Weinstein Company’s musical that received five Golden Globe nominations, is shrinking rather than expanding its theater count. After the star-studded film finishing eighth at the box-office last weekend, its second week of release, the Weinstein Company told Reuters that director Rob Marshall’s movie will go from 1,400 screens to about 890 screens.

I still can’t believe this movie got any of the nominations it has received, I will be honest I have not seen it, but I also have read very few positive revies, yet this movie is playing down the road from me and the Road is nowhere to be found
I can’t find The Road near me either. This was the one movie I really wanted to see. I was excited about Nine, but now I may wait for the DVD.
Check out any Landmark Cinemas or Angleika theaters – I didn’t think I could find the road anywhere near me, but once I expanded my search radius on Fandango, I found a great indie theater that was showing it and A serious Man (both were fantastic!)
Angelika
I’ve been dying to see “The Road”, but it never opened anywhere near me either. The Weinsteins are idiots for screwing that movie over.
The Road was phenomenal! One of the best movies I’ve seen all year. Too bad it has barely gotten any awards attention, and dreck like Nine is stealing the spots.
I loved Nine, DDL was amazing as was the rest of the cast. The songs were great.
My mom and I saw Nine this holiday weekend and absolutely loved it..It was so entertaining…The theater was pretty packed as well. People even applauded at the end of the movie and stayed through the credits, because they were showing behind the scenes. I give Nine 2 thumbs up..
I agree! The theater was packed when I saw it Monday and I enjoyed it!
Why the heck would they reduce the number of theaters if it’s already out? It’s not like they’re saving money right?
I don’t know one person who liked this movie. It was horrendous. I mean, when the one bright spot in a film is Fergie…
I haven’t seen it but it seems to me the studio really messed up with this movie. It was hyped for so long that by the time it finally came out, interest had waned. Now the cineplex is full of a half-dozen movies that people want to catch up with and Nine is getting lost in the mix. This happens every year. Anticipation only lasts for so long.
I’ve never seen such a shameless ‘give us all the Oscars’ publicity campaign for a movie. You’re right, people were sick of it before it was ever released.
they should have kept with the Thanksgiving Opening. It might have done better then.
Totally right. If they’d stuck with Thanksgiving opening this would be playing much stronger.
Yeah, I don’t know why anyone would want to release a non-blockbuster, adult-themed film on Christmas. It’s stupid.
It’s Complicated
Yeah, not surprised. Bad word of mouth is killing the movie. It’s not terrible. Great production value, great staging. The cast is pretty solid…but the songs suck, save for Fergie’s. The songs have no melody.
I really wanted to like the film. The acting I thought was great, the musical numbers were great, the film was beautifully shot….but the story! It fell flat. I’m still trying to figure out why I hated it so much.
I agree completely. I don’t know why it didn’t work, but it didn’t
Yeah, I think it was a hot mess, the songs dumb, the story and staging are dated, the women are all props that (mostly) want to have sex with DDL and that aspect doesn’t work for me at all – he is so not sexy.
I loved the stage version of Nine but the movie version is just bad. The actors aren’t at fault, it’s the director.
Precious got screwed up too. Such a powerful film, but after it was released the publicity stopped. Then by the time it went wide the interest was gone and many people I told about it said they’d never even heard of it. Not good.
Saw it yesterday & it was what I expected considering the mixed reviews. The musical numbers & the actors were good but i couldn’t get into it emotionally. The script needed more work. Nowhere near as good as ‘Chicago.’
Have no desire to see Nine. I don’t like musicals and it looks as if we’ve seen everything worth seeing about it in the trailer and the ads, so why go to it? And The Road finally opened near me. Somewhat depressing but really wonderfully acted. Viggo is amazing.
I don’t like the musical. None of the songs appeal to me. Why would I like a film of it any better.
Saw Nine yesterday, just awful.
No wonder it got all those bad reviews.
Anyway, Precious opened in my city and I also saw that, the theater was surprisingly packed, there might still be life for that movie.
