Kelis, who was reportedly dropped by Jive Records in 2007 but whose song “Acapella” lit up the internet last week, has signed with Interscope Records. Billboard.com reports that the singer will release her still-untitled album through Interscope’s joint venture with will.i.am Music Group.

Hopefully Interscope will stop trying to promote Kelis as another “ghetto” artist. If you listen to her cds, her music is very eclectic, experimental, and downright different. Yet, only her silly, hip hoppy ghetto stuff is promoted. She reminds me of Neneh Cherry in the late 80′s. So different radio and the overly catagorized music industry just doesn’t know what to do with her. And like Neneh she’s very talented and highly underrated.
So if hip-hop is “ghetto”, do you categorize country as being “white trash”? Equally ignorant.
I don’t think that’s what they meant. Everyone always tries to give Kelis a hoodrat persona. It’s not that hip-hop is ghetto, it’s just that the label tries to make her like a VH1 reality contestant. The comparison to Neneh Cherry is actually very apt. Kelis is wacky and inventive. People who only hear the singles wouldn’t get that.
